American Express sent me a letter telling me why my application
for a credit card was denied. First they said I had acquired
another credit card too recently -- they didn't say it, but that
would mean they suspect me of trying to obtain more cards to run
up bills. The other reason was that I was too close to the
maximum limits as a percent on my other cards. Oh really?
I can see why they might think that; but if they think that, why
send me an offer then for one of their cards in the first place?
Then in a few days I got another offer in the mail from them
saying if I wanted the benefits of having an American Express
card, I could deposit money with them and get a debit card.
Ha, ha! Now why would I do that? If I had extra money lying
about, I'd pay off the credit cards with high interest rates at
17% and 18%, not deposit it with them so I could earn 2% on my
purchases! They got to be nuts to think their card is so great
I'd be willing to do that.
I have made payments for the bills due in December on all the
credit cards except one; and that is the new one which I intend
to pay off in full each month while collecting 1.5% on my
purchases. So I can see what my total will be. It will be
$900 less than the month before; and the average interest rate
went down too:
September = 18.36%
October = 18.09%
November = 17.30%
December = 16.16%
When the new rate on the transferred amount kicks in in January,
that should really knock the average percent down. My guess is
it should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 10%. If I keep
paying more on the high interest rates and just the minimum on
the lowest one, it should keep declining.
I "overdid" it a little paying them off that much and will wind
up, after paying the December's mortgage payment here at the end
of November, about $350 less in my bank accounts than I had
budgeted -- but that's fine since so many bills due in December
have already been paid.

Good to hear things are working out well. My truck is still in
the shop and I am having to use my wife's vehicle to go back and
forth to work. It might cost me a good bit for all the hoses
and the labor to put them on. Originally it was going to cost
over $400 for just 3 of the needed hoses, ack! There was about
6 of them. So they decided to get some cheaper ones (about $10
apiece) that were similar enough, that they could be fitted with
a bit of cutting, and they said the old hoses werent coming off
easily either. So the parts will be cheaper, but the labor
cost will be more. And then they are shut down on weekends and
had thurs and fri off for thanksgiving, so probably monday or
tues before I get the bad news about the cost.

I never heard of such expensive hoses. Good grief! And why
take off Friday as well as Thursday for Thanksgiving?
I think deer season will start soon here; and my mechanic
sometimes take off for that. I hope I don't need some emergency
repair then!
Some other news about cars. My mechanic had advised me not to
use an engine cleaner since he said they could make clogged up
carbon come loose and really foul up my cylinders; so at first I
put in only about half the recommended amount of the Lucas
Upper Cylinder Lube and Injector Cleaner. I think I already
told how it improved my mileage drastically -- I can drive my
paper route four days now instead of three on the same amount of
gas. Then last week, I decided I'd probably already cleaned
out a lot of the carbon using the weaker mixture so I dumped in
the recommended amount. Then my engine light went out after
another four days of doing the route. I don't know why, but I
think maybe the stronger mixture cleaned out the clogged up
valve that was turning the light on or perhaps the engine was
just running cleaner -- or maybe the gas station switched to a
winter mix.

Ahhh, Lucas is one of the best selling ones at our walmart
automotive section, plus another one called seafoam. Actually
seafoam is probably the best selling, but Lucas is right behind
it. We have more stp than any other of that type of fuel
additive, but its probably the worst selling, pretty sure they
pay walmart extra just to keep the shelf space there.

Interesting there, Brad. One time I was at Walmart, the Lucas
item I was looking for wasn't on the shelf. Sold out, I guess.
I hadn't heard about Seafoam so didn't know if I should buy it,
but I didn't buy the STP one.

Now our go to guy in Tire and lube express says that its best to
use just half a can of seafoam per treatment.

I am getting ahead of myself at Kiva. I transferred some money
from my bank to Pay Pal and when that got completed, I put
another $50 into Kiva. Yes, I figure I can afford $50 a month
instead of $25; and since most of December's bills have been
paid and I'm waiting for more pay checks to roll in, I figured
why not put more money into Kiva? So I was working on the $50
of January's budget now. I long for the day when my credit
card bills are about half what they are now -- maybe I'll up it
to $100 then.
So I lent to two more people, and it turned out both were from
El Salvador. If you're interested, you can read about them:

Dairy cows or goats or even chickens are great things for people
to work with to increase their food supply of milk and eggs and
the occasional meats as more animals come forth.

[/quote]Very true. I also feel helping people in El Salvador is
helping the US too. If we want to stop a "flood" of
immigrants, we should want to see the lives of people in
Central America improving. The poverty rate in El Salvador is
going down, they say; but it's still high.

My latest loan at Kiva is to a school in Uganda to help them buy
a UV water filtration system so the children have good water to
drink. Right now, they boil the water -- and that consumes
wood and costs them money for the wood. So in the long term,
this system will save them money and be better for the
environment too. It makes me glad to think I have a small
part in helping them do this.
