A Problem
By: Piper Date: April 19, 2015, 1:50 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Here is a problem: Whenever we, as a group,
begin discussing anything pertaining to the Catholic faith, one
topic soon splits into many; we begin with discussion of the
Church and its teachings on sex and marriage, then soon switch
to questions concerning the Catechism, then on to the "faults"
of the Church in general, then onto the question of teaching
authority within the Church (adding to what Jesus taught), which
leads to the necessity of explaining binding and loosing, then
we suddenly move on to the question of who really founded the
Church . . .
The reason I point this out is only to express that I am doing
my best to keep up, but, truly, each topic is a subject unto
itself and if one is truly interested, more time, study, and
explanation are needed to really understand each individual
topic. In the past, the deeper I go into explanation, thinking
I am patiently answering questions that were asked or addressing
topics that were brought up, I have found I am soon unfairly
seen as "pushing a Catholic agenda", or I'm seen as trying to
"teach Catholicism" to people who are happy where they are and
who are not at all interested in Catholicism.
It's a bit of a dilemma. I don't wish to waste my time
explaining in detail to people who really have no interest in
understanding. Yet, I can't ignore direct questions without
being rude. I also will not ignore direct fallacies. So, I try
to be brief, but brevity has its downfalls.
If I'm in a position where I'm the only one attempting to
explain the Catholic POV, it can become a bit overwhelming. I
only ask: Please don't ask questions (or initiate topics)
unless you are truly interested in the answers and explanations.
Obviously, I have great interest in these things, so I may
eventually utilize the Catholic board Kerry created, where I
could then go into lengthy detail, if for no other reason than
to supplement and clarify my own personal study. But I don't
want to do so if such study is not welcome within this group of
members; I'm not certain there is a legitimate interest. I can
keep my interest to myself and stick to more 'neutral' topics,
if my posts are to be seen as a problem.
Time is, of course, a factor for all of us. I don't have much
to waste.
Please give me your thoughts. I don't wish to offend, knowing
most people here are Protestant.

Let me ask the members a favor. If you know a Catholic who
would take on moderating the Catholic board, please feel free to
invite him or her to join. I don't feel that comfortable myself
doing it; and Piper/Nancy lacks the time and is also still
learning. I've asked people but without any success. Perhaps
they dread the task?
They would have some advantages here they may lack at other
predominantly Protestant forums. They could edit and delete
posts on their board. They could kick people off the board. I
would even consider giving them the ability to issue warnings
that could result in suspension.

Although I have some problems with the catholic faith, and do
not consider myself catholic, my mother is catholic, I was
baptized catholic as a child, and have great respect for
catholics simply because I have known many of them who are real
examples of what a christian should be. I have no problems
with hearing about catholicism whatsoever, and sometimes it
irritates me when people trash talk it, versus simply stating
what they disagree with, about it. I dont really have
questions about them though.

I don't think there is much interest in
Catholicism among this group of members, thus far, so I'll do my
best to confine related posts to the appropriate board. Thanks
to Kerry for providing such space.
