chapter 1
the birth
Weeks have passed already since the birth of her three pups.
They were beautiful, gorgeous, and definitely reminded the
mother of their father, Pouri, but she knew that she would never
be with him after this. It was Chieftain Rangatira's law, and
law for many of the chieftains before him, that a wolf to birth
a ngaro, which meant 'lacking' in their language, could never
mate again in risk of birthing another wolf without powers.
All wolves were supposed to be born with powers. There were
finned wolves with strong lungs, strengthened wolves with strong
limbs and extreme smartness, and seer wolves with extreme
eyesight and the ability to see visions and read minds. Ngaro
wolves, however, lacked these powers. They could be as normal
and as perfect as can be, but without these powers, they were
proven useless and would serve as a nameless omega in a random
pack, away from their family, and the mother to these omegas
would never mate again.
Hina had given birth to three beautiful wolves; a gray female
who's wings were already starting to sprout, a darker male who's
paws were webbed with fins, and a beautiful lighter gray male.
She felt a longing towards this pale pup, but he lacked the
powers. He had no wings, no strength, and no complex yellow eyes
that revealed seeing powers. He was a normal wolf, looked down
upon by the other wolves of a higher rank, last to eat, last to
sleep, one to do all the dirty work. She sighed at the thought
of her pup going through these hardships. He didn't deserve it,
but it was pack law. It was law since the powered wolves were
more common than the normal wolves, when the normal wolves were
a rare occurence.
A carrier was in the birthing den now, and the few mothers in
the den grew quiet as he walked around the litters, scanning
them carefully to see their age. He stopped infront of a ginger
she-wolf, bending down to look at the pups. "Magneficent litter,
m'lady," he said with a deep voice that sent shivers down Hina's
spine. He hummed to himself for a bit as he nudged the pups out
of the nest, examining what powers they had. It wasn't long
before he named them and sent them off to the other carriers to
bring them to their group, and he resumed his job.
Hina's litter was next, and her breath quickened as the
carrier kneeled down next to the litter. He gave quiet
compliments to two, but when his gaze rested on the ngaro, his
lips pulled back and a grimace spread across his face.
"Disgusting creature," he mumbled, lifting his gaze to meet the
mother's eyes. His eyes were complex and yellow, and it was
obvious that he was a seer. "Your bloodline is forever tainted
with the blood of this ngaro. Never shall you mother again, and
never shall your pups refer to you as their mother." He spoke
loud and clearly, betraying any hints of emotions as he
sentenced the she-wolf to eternal isolation. Hina felt the eyes
of the two other mothers burning into her pelt. They knew she
had given birth to a ngaro, but was it sympathy or contempt that
they felt for her?
The carrier nudged the dark male up first. He yipped
indiginantly, and began snarling at the wolf who had disturbed
his slumber. But the carrier took no notice, and simply said,
"Auahne, wolf speak for 'ambitious'. You have been blessed with
fins and strong lungs, and you will forever reside in the Water
Pack." With that, another carrier stepped forward, and walked
away with the pup.
"Otsana, wolf speak for 'she-wolf.' You have been blessed
with flight and light bones and will forever reside in the Air
Pack." A winged carrier grabbed the gray pup, and turned away.
Away from her mother, and away from her siblings.
Now the carrier's gaze rested on the ngaro. Hina's sweet
little pale gray wolf. He was perfect in every way, and the
longing for him grew stronger than ever. She couldn't let him
leave her, she couldn't let him live the horrid life of an
omega. But regardless, the carrier spoke loud and clear. "Pup,
you have been cursed to live forever without the following
blessings from Lupus: seeing, fins, strength, and wings. Your
name will be Omega. You will serve the Stone Pack as the lowest
member, never to see your family and never to mate." The carrier
beckoned a large russet wolf over. The carrier from the Stone
Pack seemed hesitant to touch the ngaro, as if the curse was
contagious, but after a snap from the other carrier, the omega
was finally picked up.
Hina could hardly hear what the carrier had to say next. She
couldn't tear her gaze from the pale gray pup. As the carrier
walked away with it, she felt a twinge in her heart and a burst
of energy slice through her, and before she knew it, she was up
on her paws, flying through the air towards the carrier, and
timed seemed to stop. As she landed hard on the wolf's
shoulders, sound restored to her ears, and the dull colors of
the cave looked brighter than ever. She felt paws ram into her
side as she was knocked away, and the carrier that named her
pups stood over her, staring down at her with an emotionless
yellow gaze. He stared deep into her mind, silently breaking
every law imaginable for seers. Hina caught herself locked into
his gaze, as if she was falling into the deep dark hole of his
iris.
She felt herself slip into a trance, as if her mind was being
controlled by the carrier. Her ears slipped back against her
head and her tail curled under her hind legs. She pulled her
lips back to revealed her teeth and turned her gaze away from
his. He simply snorted and turned away from her pathetic
submission. But as soon as he turned, she lifted her gaze,
staring at the light gray pup, Omega.
"May Lupus be with you," she breathed.
