OH MY [ open // snakepaw needed ]
By: Raven` Date: March 6, 2017, 11:45 am

Spiderscare was out, taking a walk, and hoping that the mists
would help her with her recent sickness. It sort of did, though
she still felt... off. The deputy decided to ignore it for now,
and perhaps try to hunt. She tilted her nose towards the air,
breathing it in and scenting a mouse. Quite a few, even.
She followed the scent, stomach brushing on the cold grass
beneath her. Soon enough, she found a nest of them, most of
which still small and furless. She faltered, tail lashing behind
her as she stared at the small, rodent children. They could feed
a few of the apprentices, if she gave a few to each one. But,
she couldn't even raise her paw, let alone think about killing
them.
She stumbled back, falling on her behind after tripping over a
root. After that, she stared blankly ahead, as if she was
watching the mist before her eyes. Maybe she was, as it happened
to dance in front of her, swirling around the nest she decided
not to disturb. The fog then turned itself onto her, swirling
around her midsection.
Spider felt like she wanted to throw up.
She should've denied that dare; she should have just gave up and
told Morningstar that Snakepaw was ready to become a warrior.
She should've begged for a different apprentice. But, now it's
too late, and the she-cat was pregnant. She didn't know whether
to cry, or to strangle the tom. Well, in the least, he should
know their bet was still standing.
"S-Snakepaw?" he was still an apprentice. This was terrible,
terrible, terrible. Her paws ached as she brought herself into
camp. "Has anyone seen my - my apprentice?" she finally asked,
ears flat against her skull.

Crow-wing glanced up when he heard the deputy, but
realized that she wasn't speaking to him. He still rose up and
faced the deputy, ears twitching back slightly when he saw how
distressed she was. He approached her, a concerned look on his
face. "Spiderscare, is something wrong?" He glanced around in
hopes of spotting Snakepaw, but the apprentice couldn't be
spotted at the moment. "Snakepaw might be out hunting."

Snakepaw, on the other hand, was feeling great! He'd recently
put more effort into his training and now the thought of
becoming a warrior didn't seem as daunting as before. He wasn't
completely satisfied with taking on more responsibility, but
instead of immensely irritating him and dragging him down, he
felt light and full of energy. There was something empowering
about being proud of something you've done, rather than just
accepting yourself for who you are, which, for him, was a lazy
good-for-nothing tom who caused more trouble than he was worth.
No one really expected him to amount to much, especially him,
but here he was. And all because he switched mentors.
Really, he applauded Morningstar for the change that had at
first scared him to death. It was already weird enough to be
friends with the deputy, but then to be trained by a friend you
literally grew up beside? Who slept in the same apprentice den?
Let's just say it made him feel extremely...uncomfortable. But
after training a couple times with the deputy and doing
everything he could to make it difficult, his feelings had
changed for some unknown reason that wasn't obvious to him at
all. He had to admit to himself that he even looked forward to
it.
However, since Spiderscare hadn't been feeling well lately, the
tom tried to keep himself busy. He entered the camp with a
couple pieces of prey dangling from his clenched teeth by their
tails. He automatically started heading for the fresh-kill pile
until he noticed Spiderscare and Crow-wing several feet in front
of him, coincidentally talking about him. Concern slightly
creased his face and his eyes narrowed.
"Yeah, I'm right here. What's up?" he said, dropping the prey
halfway through speaking as he walked up beside the distraught
Spiderscare. He looked over at the deputy and suddenly the
stress covering her face hit him and his eyes widened a bit with
worry and confusion. Questions immediately began to swirl in his
mind as wondered what was bothering her. Was he in trouble? Did
he do something wrong? Or was she so sick that..she couldn't
train him anymore? His heartbeat quickened as he racked his
brain for what could have went wrong, but he mostly just kept
his green eyes on Spiderscare as he anxiously waited for her
reply.

Spiderscare's tail instinctively flicked under her body, as if
it could hide any present bump. She faked a smile towards
Crowwing - though, it was awkward, and maybe a bit crooked due
to her worry. "Nothing's wrong. I just... I just have to tell
him something." she hummed, tail swishing back. "You're free to
stick around, though. It'll affect all of us soon enough." she
finished speaking and waited alongside the asthmatic tom, eyes
searching for her apprentice.
Her stomach lurched as she saw the prey he brought in - he was
shaping to be a fine hunter, and perhaps a better fighter. Soon
enough he could be promoted to warrior. But would that make this
any easier? "That you are." she murmured, absentmindedly at
first. Geez, how did she want to say this? "I just... uh, I
wanted to tell you that..." her ears flicked back slightly. She
didn't know what to say - or, rather, how to say it. She took a
deep breath, summoning all the courage she could before speaking
once more.
"I will be rushing your training, as I will soon be heavy
with... with kits." her voice broke as she tried to make it more
mentor/apprentice, not new mother/new father. Tears welded up in
her eyes, and she put on a small, scared smile as she realized
what she said. It wasn't something she said out loud before, so
it was certainly a new experience to hear it. "I'm pregnant,
Snakepaw. With... with your kits." she finally murmured,
shoulders shaking slightly as she fought the urge to sob.

Snakepaw looked expectantly towards Spiderscare, especially as
she began to speak but struggled with her words and hesitated a
few times. Tell him what? The longing to know shone in his eyes,
while at the same time, he stressed about what it might be.
Obviously it affected her enough to bring her to the brink of
crying. He wasn't the type to do so, but if it had anything to
do with hurting Spiderscare he just might.
When she finally spilled out the next sentence, he felt a
million thoughts and emotions run through his body. His eyes
widened with surprise, but also confusion as she peered into her
teary eyes with disbelief. He so wished she didn't mean what he
thought she meant, but there was no way it could be anything
else. Heavy with kits? It sounded weird, but it was pretty
straightforward. There was no denying it as much as he felt the
need to, and it was obvious now that the stomach bug she'd had
for the past few days was truly morning sickness. But why was
this happening all of the sudden? He'd barely had any time to
train with her, and now she went and got herself-
Wait.
Shock and realization covered his face, and it only felt more
insane and real when she confirmed it. She was pregnant. With
his kits. He was gonna be a dad. The emotions he was feeling
were all jumbled up and simply showed up on his face with a
dropped jaw, and for a moment when he tried to speak, nothing
came out. "Y-you're..you're.." he started, but couldn't find the
words to say while his eyes were locked with hers.
Pregnant. That's what she was, dummy. As he repeated her words
in his mind, he suddenly felt the urge to smile or laugh or cry
with joy. A burst of energy rushed through him, whether it was
happiness or adrenaline, he wasn't sure. No matter what it was,
the look of shame and weakness on her face made him unsure what
to feel. Was this not a good thing? Did she not want the kits?
Holy StarClan, this was his fault. Partly hers, but mostly his.
They were just bickering and joking around like they normally
did, but it happened, and now poor Spiderscare had to deal with
it. "You're pregnant...oh man..." he muttered, his gaze drifting
away as he tried to gather his thoughts that just continued to
fall and fumble out his grasp. He pressed his lips together and
brought his eyes back over to the deputy. What was he supposed
to say? Sorry? Congrats? They were barely even a couple, but
these were his too and he felt responsible.
"That's..that's...great?" Once the words left his mouth, he
instantly felt regret. That was probably the one thing he should
not have said. Thanks a lot, brain. He felt happy, he did, and
he cared deeply for Spiderscare, but he wasn't prepared at all
for this surprise, nor was he good at handling others' emotions.
That's it. She hated him. He ruined everything.
( these poor children rip )

Spider's eyes were watery, making her vision blurry as the tom
digested the news. She couldn't see, very well, his momentary
happiness for the situation, nor could she understand it fully.
Children were amazing, and having them with someone you were
very close to only made it all the more better. But, Spiderscare
was often stuck on the darker side of things. She found that
while thinking of the worst, any outcome will be better than it.
She was too young, too naive. She didn't know how to be a
mother, she would ruin their lives. She could give them bad
advice, that would lead to their deaths. Or she could just
sentence them to death by birthing them - surely the Gods
wouldn't be happy with a deputy breaking the rules by having
children with an apprentice. Her apprentice. Snakepaw was her
age, too, but he was careless. The idea of being a warrior was
lost on him - what was the idea of being a dad like?
She lifted her paw to wipe away her own tears, just barely
revealing the little bump beneath her furry tummy. It wasn't
noticeable, as she often covered it, but now the news was out.
She couldn't hide it after this. Spiderscare fought the urge to
cry harder as he stuttered - he couldn't even comprehend the
idea. Maybe he was too young. Maybe he was a child himself. She
opened her mouth to apologize, to tell him he didn't have to
worry about it. The bet was off, he didn't have to continue it
and be a "great dad." Everyone could forget who the dad was -
she could get Crowwing to act as the dad or something. Then
leave the kits on GoldClan border - that'd be a good idea.
"That's..that's...great?"
It was posed as a question, but there was meaning behind it. Was
he genuinely happy? Did he actually... want these kids? She
began to wonder if the bet was a bet at all, or if there was
some other motive behind it. Maybe he liked her? She didn't
know. Surely there was some attraction, if they went all the way
like that and didn't back out. She took a shaky breath and tried
to level herself before speaking again. Her head was lowered,
though kept level enough so she could still look into his eyes.
"If you think so." she finally responded, ears turned back. She
took another deep breath, this one shaky as she continued to
fight her sobs. Her throat began to hurt, but she didn't want to
break down completely yet. She didn't want to seem weak - even
though she was. So weak. She wasn't ready for motherhood. She
couldn't even be a good deputy, or a mentor, or a warrior.
"Snakepaw. I'm scared. I'm... I'm so scared." she whispered, her
form breaking as her shoulders hunched over some more, her gaze
finally dropping to the ground. One of the kits kicked as she
stressed over the situation, causing her to lurch forward and
turn her gaze to her stomach. It was a pitiful glare, as her
eyes were too red to make anything harmful.

The dark grey tom was.. startled? Surprise is a
definite emotion he felt now, and Crow-wing didn't know what to
say either. He was caught between asking how this had happened
and asking what the young couple would do. Apparently his body
took advantage of this shock to force a cough through him, and
he wheezed. He settled again, his gaze flicking between the two
younger cats. "...I will leave you two to discuss this." He
started to leave before he quietly meowed to Spiderscare,
"Mistyflower could help you with your litter. She is an
experienced queen despite her... personality."

Snakepaw almost didn't want to see her reaction to his
stupidity, but was unable to look away from the deputy. Besides,
he had to face this. It was his fault and his responsibility, so
he would have to take any punishment he deserved. Even it was in
the form of his closest friend turning away from his pathetic
self. The word responsibility suddenly grew significantly
heavier upon his shoulders. Regrettably, he wanted to go back to
being a child again, with no worries or cares about his future.
Now his future was standing right in front of him about to give
him another slap in the face, and he wasn't ready.
However, she reacted differently than he expected. She didn't
tell him off, or say she regretted their time together (though
she might have on the inside), or push him away because she was
the mature and perfect one who didn't deserve his presence
tainting her reputation any longer. Spiderscare simply let out a
soft reply, perhaps with a tiny glimmer of relief and hope
showing through. Maybe she didn't hate him. Maybe they had a
chance.
She was at the brink of crumbling at the weight her feelings and
fears pouring out in tears. It often slipped his mind that
seemingly perfect people had flaws, and weaknesses, just as he
did. The sweet yet strong she-cat holding herself up in front of
him reminded him even more how much he put others up and dragged
himself down in his mind. Her watery eyes tugged, or more like
tore, at his heart. It almost felt as if he would cry, too, and
he gave a tense, shaky breath.
When she finally admitted her fear in a trembling whisper,
Snakepaw felt his heart clench. He gulped, pushing down his own
worries and cares for the time that wanted to make themselves
known as well. A realization had hit him hard in the gut. It
wasn't at all about him; it was about her, and these children
unintentionally created together. He stepped forward. "I..I do,"
he said honestly, a weak smile pulling on his maw. "I'm scared
too, but we..we'll be okay. You've got the whole clan, a-and me,
to help. Mistyflower, me, and, um, M-Morningstar. You..We can do
this," he finished, trying to look her in the teary blue eyes
she had pointed towards the ground. The encouraging words
sounded and felt strange coming out his own mouth, but he meant
it. He really did believe in her. Himself, well, not so much. He
hesitated, then reached forward, attempting to brushing his
cheek against hers and wrap a foreleg around her.
