Referee replaced during matches
By: Left Field Date: July 3, 2019, 12:19 pm

On the old forum there was a thread about this but it doesn't
seem to have reappeared here. A couple of instances I've
recently come across...
Preston v Mansfield, 28.2.1976. Referee Keith Styles was injured
during the second half and replaced by linesman John Lydon (not
of The Sex Pistols but Warrington and who later closed his
career at the 1978 FA Cup Final). Perhaps more remarkable though
was his replacement on the line - Cliff Duxbury of Preston who
had retired as a League referee ten years earlier. At 57 years
old Mr. Duxbury must have been one of the oldest individuals to
officiate in a match at that time althougb more recently we have
had officials such as Nigel Miller who have matched that record.
Mr. Duxbury died just two years later.
In March 1974 Roger Kirkpatrick was injured during the second
half of the Blackpool-Preston derby. He tried to carry on for a
short while before being replaced by the senior linesman. This
would have been either Allan Hughes of West Kirby or Frank (RF)
Thomas of Helsby. Both were appointed to the supplementary list
of referees the following season with Mr. Hughes later
progressing to the full list for three seasons.

To me it seemed odd that for so many years there were no reserve
or "standby" officials present at matches for these sorts of
eventualities. I was surprised to discover recently that
apparently it was because it was felt it would deplete the
number of referees who could officiate in amateur football. It
would have depleted it - by one, and given that not all amateur
referees are in action every match it seemed an odd rationale.
This kind of issue wouldn't apply to night matches but even they
didn't have standby officials. I'm sure local referees would
have jumped at the chance to perform this role even if the
chance of making it onto the field would be very low. Eventually
these local reserve officials were introduced for League and Cup
games from the 1980s.

There was the famous incident when TV pundit Jimmy Hill replaced
a linesman at Highbury. And when a linesman went down during a
Palace v Brighton match in the 1970s, my local RA colleague was
over the fence in tracksuit and boots before the stricken
linesman had left the field. I never did find out whether he
always turned up for matches in this way. When a linesman - Eric
Crickmore I believe - cried off midway through a London derby,
FL ref Reg Paine was called for from the crowd and appeared in
tracksuit, having apparently travelled to the game with his
Middlesex colleague and match referee John Homewood. More
recently, the injury prone Pat Miller failed to reappear at
Selhurst Park for the 2nd half of a game and it took an age for
a replacement AR to be found, with the senior AR taking over in
the middle. And just this season, an AR at Gresty Road pulled up
after less than five minutes play and immediately swapped with
the 4O, and on this occasion, play continued with a minimum of
delay.

in the days before reserve officials referees (and linesmen)
might have felt more need to keep going when injured as in the
Roger Kirkpatrick instance noted above. Sometimes the referee
moved to the line, at least until a reserve could be found. This
happened when Ken Burns was injured in a Merseyside derby in
1971; however his replacement in the middle was Jack Wrennall
who was not just a linesman but a supplementary referee and
soon-to-be FL referee so that may have made Ken more prepared to
stand down. Interestingly the other linesman was also a
supplementary referee - David Richardson - who was slightly less
senior and who had to wait a year later for promotion before
going to eclipse his Lancashire counterpart.
In a similar instance on the last day of the season in 1986-1987
referee Alf Buksh was unable to continue - reportedly due to
heat exhaustion - and his replacement was linesman John Carter
who became a FL referee the following season. It's possible his
impending promotion was already known then but he would
certainly have been a contender and therefore considered a very
fitting replacement.

Alf Buksh was replaced during three Ipswich matches he refereed.
The final occasion was the televised FA Cup Fifth Round replay
at Anfield when he was replaced by the senior linesman Ken
Leach. The following season Leach was promoted to the FL list.

Ipswich have had more than their share of mid-match
replacements. David Rock who came on several years back has
finally made it onto the League list.

One of the stranger incidents of a ref carrying on after being
injured also arose at Ipswich when Alan Turvey was involved in a
collision with a player but carried on to the end of the game,
whereupon he found that he had broken his leg. Whether there was
any measurable decline in performance after the incident is not
known ;D

The only other replacement that I can recall who made it to the
league list was a much younger Dean Whitestone who took over
from Mark Warren during the 2002/03 season at Portman Road.

Going back to the days before reserve/ fourth officials, on more
than one occasion the former FIFA referee Ernie Crawford ended
up running the line at Doncaster when one of the officials had
to go off. Off the top of my head I think one of the departing
officials was Keith Butcher, who pulled a muscle.
