Mr Gow and Mr Walters.

Just watching an episode of THE BIG MATCH REVISITED today and it
featured two games from the [ then] first division from April
23rd 1976 featuring QPR V Leeds Utd and Ipswich v Derby.
The referees that day were referred to as Mr Gow and a Mr
Walters [ who was officiating for the final occasion that day].
Just out of curiosity on a winter's afternoon who were they and
did they have long refereeing careers ?
Are both still alive ?

W J Gow, known as John, was a science teacher from Swansea. He
was regarded as one of the senior referees of his day and served
on the international panel for Wales. I believe he is no longer
alive.
Mr Walters ( Peter ? ) came from Somerset. He wasn't as high
profile as John Gow but got a fair number of First Division
fixtures.

Peter Walters from Bridgwater was a headteacher and a referee on
the EFL from 1966 to 1976. I already have him on my 'final game'
database refereeing Ipswich v Derby in April 1976, so someone
else (JT?) must have known this was his final game. John Gow was
an EFL referee from 1963 to 1978. He was favourite to referee
the FA Cup Final in 1978 at the end of his long career, but was
beaten to it, quite surprisingly, by another retiree, Derek
Nippard, and John's last game was Palace v Blackburn in April
1978, a game I might have been at but probably not. I don't
think I ever saw Peter in action, and I never warmed to John who
I thought displayed stern schoolteacher looks and actions rather
more than needed. I recall both were quite small in stature.
