David Webb - Ipswich Town v Sheffield Wednesday
By: TA_Ref Date: December 20, 2025, 11:57 am

A strange performance from David Webb, leaving my head in a
little bit of a mess. Struggling to really describe his
performance. Inconsistent? Erratic at times?
I thought Webb started really well. Set a good level of foul
detection from the start and always in control of the match.
Unfortunately this didnt last for long.
For me, there was a pretty blatant foul on Furlong that went
unpunished in the attacking third and it was from there where I
felt Webb started to lose his accuracy in decision making.
Some fouls were given and then some werent, irritating both
sets of supporters. It was a sort of wishy washy performance I
wouldnt expect from Webb.
The foul that led to the free kick for Sheffield Wednesdays
goal was harsh. I felt Kipre was much stronger than the forward
without committing a foul. Maybe my Ipswich glasses are clouding
my judgement but its no excuse for the poor defending for their
goal.
Then something started happening that was concerning. It felt
like he wasnt following the protocol regarding head injuries.
There was one especially in the middle of the park for a
Wednesday player which Webb went up to the player, pointed at
him and then just played on. I expected the play to stop.
There was another for a Wednesday player, admittedly while
Ipswich were attacking, so it was more difficult to stop play
but it felt far too long for play to stop.
He had no influence on the result but I felt he got quite a few
things wrong and thats not something that I associate with
Webb. Not a good performance for his usually high standards.

I'm a bit of an outlier on here regarding opinions on David Webb
and I'm afraid that performance was exactly what I expected from
him.

A similar performance when he refereed the Watford match here on
4th November. Seems to concern himself more on having a throw in
taken in the right place than picking up on fouls.

I have seen David Webb live twice and he was excellent on both
occasions. Two inferences to draw from this. First, different
people are impressed by different aspects of refereeing and
match control. Secondly, referees have some very good matches
and some not so good. Neither of these observations are earth
shattering in their profundity.
