F.A. Cup Match Officials 1945-46 to 1969-70
By: John Treleven Date: October 7, 2025, 10:15 am
---------------------------------------------------------
My current project is to find the referee and linesmen for the
3,959 matches in this quarter of a century
2,864 matches found so far and probable referees obtained for
875 of the 1,095 that are missing
The vast majority were F.L. officials at the time of the match
However, the F.A. continued to appoint non F.L. officials as
well, although this gradually lessened
1,298 have been discovered so far (a few were ex or future F.L.
officials)
Most of those have been identified but there are 238 I cannot
put a first name to
Can any learned readers add anything to these elusive characters
(listed in order of the matches)?
Where home town was not given in the programme I have added
where the match was played

1962-63 Hartley, G. @ Hull City. Could this be the G. Hartley
of Wakefield who became a Football League referee in about 1968?
Though even if he is, I'm afraid I can't help with the first
name.

1959-1960 Hedges G at Exeter City
I wonder whether that was George Hedges from Oxford, elder
brother of Dennis Hedges ?
I will try to find out !

I was thinking the same. Definitely 'George' if it is.

I was out with Dennis sevral times on the Isthmian League and
never realised a possible connection. Good bloke and good
referee.

George & Dennis were twins (29 Oct 1941), so if George was the
elder it was only by a few minutes
and at just 18 would have been too young to have been at Exeter
I cannot find any references to "G. Hedges referee" in the
British Newspaper Archive

1968-69 Cook, H. (Salford): could this be a misprint in the
programme for H. Crook? I may be mistaken, but I seem to
remember an official of that name and initial refereeing in the
Northern Premier League in the early 1970s.

1969-70 P Flinders at Hendon - I recall a 'Polly' Flinders in my
early days with Surrey RA. I believe he lived at Morden. No idea
whether this is the same chap or what his first name was, but
geography and timeline is about right.
