ICC World T20 2026 - Discussion
By: Mackem ref Date: August 29, 2025, 11:46 am
---------------------------------------------------------
It's nice to see a few contributors to the forum discussing
cricket appointments, so I thought I'd generate a discussion
around which officials may be selected for the next World T20.
Based on the assumptions that the ICC will appoint 20 umpires to
the tournament (as they did in 2024) and that the 16 members of
the Elite and Emerging panel will all be selected, my question
is who would the remaining 4 slots go to?
My thoughts:
1) Female officials - would the ICC take the step of appointing
female officials to a senior men's tournament? If so, Kim Cotton
and Claire Polosak are surely the frontrunners
2) Diversifying national representation - would the ICC look to
the likes of Ireland and Afghanistan to appoint officials for
the tournament? In this case, Roly Black and Ahmed Shah Pakteen
would surely be favourites.
3) Relying on experience - would the ICC look back to officials
who have previously served in tournaments but no longer find
themselves on the emerging panel? Ruchira Palliyaguruge, Langton
Rusere and Rashid Riaz spring to mind.
4) New talent - who do the ICC see as the up and coming talent
on the international list from the full members? Leslie Reifer,
Gazi Sohel, Masudur Rahman, Rohan Pandit 0 any other names?
5) Associate officials - finally, a curve ball. Would the ICC
consider an associate official to be appointed to a full senior
tournament? Viswandan Kalidas? Buddhi Pradhan? Any others?
It would be great to hear people's thoughts and predictions of
the selected officials for the tournament.

I think the main focus has to be having a wider variety of
nations involved in elite panel cricket, and this tournament.
All too often its the same small group doing the same teams
(Dharmesena and England) which must be killing them with all the
travelling and time away from home.
My view is that each test nation has three elite umpires minimum
to share the workload around, with a group of three in a
development group ready and waiting to take over when the time
comes.
Or we could ask Mallender to come back into the fold
😜😂

I think Raza and Yaqoob may not officiate. I am not sure they
will be able to officiate in India, and Sri Lanka is hosting
Pakistan games.

Very intersting discussion i must say.. Few points i want to add
also.
I am completely agree about the female appointments in big
tournament for mens T20 worldcup .Few other names who i feel
have great potential to perform like williams(WI) Lauren(SA) and
vrinda(IND) also there .
I can predict the emerging umpires from internal panel of
umpires from the appointments from ICC side or the performance
wise like Rashid (PAK) , Rehman(Bang) ,Shaun haig(NZ),
Ahmed(Afg), Black(Ire), Rohan(Ind) & Leise(WI)
ICC can choose previous emerging panel umpire also like
Gregory(WI) and other two langton (WI) and Ruchira(SL)

Sri Lanka are hosting more than just the Pakistan games, theyve
been official co-hosts before it was agreed that India and
Pakistan wouldnt play in the others countries.
For what its worth Ill guess that the 4 umpires not on the
elite or emerging panel will be Reifer (WI), Rusere (Zim),
Palliyaguruge(Sri Lanka) & Ill also punt for Martin Saggers
from England!

Very interesting question- my takes would be:
1. Maybe Cotton, though I don't feel like she is getting quite
enough NZC high level appointments. Polosak likewise, whilst a
solid umpire is clearly probably around 8-10th ranked amongst
the CA contracted umpires based on last Australian summer based
on the number of men's FC and LO games she did, so I don't think
she would figure presuming the ICC wants to pick what they see
as the 20 best umpires
2. Roly Black does seem well regarded, generally speaking it's
hard to pick the next 4 to make up 17-20 now that the ICC
actually tells us who is on the Emerging Panel
3. I think Riaz could figure, beyond that the ICC does to some
extent seem to take the approach that once you'd had your
audition on the EP and not made the Elite you are adrift for at
least a couple of years, so I think the other two are out
4. Reifer seems well regarded, in an Australian context Donovan
Koch is solid and clearly number 2 on the IP behind Nogajski.
Beyond that agree re: either of the two Bangladeshis, or indeed
anyone who features at the Asia Cup especially at the pointy
end. Only other real form guide is the 2023 World Cup qualifier,
which among those not since promoted one or more levels or
dropped from the Emerging Panel gives us Black, Saggers,
Wimalasiri, Pakteen, Knights, Reifer, Chabi and Jele
5. I don't think so but then who knows- Pradhan is now at least
by years one of the most experienced umpires on an ICC panel
At this stage, my 4 in addition to the Elite and Emerging Panels
would be Riaz (unless geopolitics get in the way), Reifer,
Wimalasiri and Black (as a wild card). Other possibles- Koch,
Saggers, Knights

It would be intersting if everyone mention their list of one
emerging umpire from each cricket nation including associate
member if you can (exclude elite panel and emerging panel )?
My list is :-
Afg - Ahmed shah pakteen
Aus - Donovan koch
Bang - Masudur rehman
Eng -Martin saggers
Ind - Rohan pandit
Ire - Roland black
Nz - Shaun haig
Pak - Rashid riaz
SA -
SL - Raveendra Wimalasari
WI - Leslie reifer
Zim -
My 4 umpires would be :-
Rashid riaz, Roland black, leslie reifer & Shaun haig

I believe the four umpires most likely to join elite and
emerging umpires at the World Cup will be Riaz, Rusere, Saggers
and one of Reiffer, Haig or Koch. I know Rusere was dropped from
the emerging panel but I think this was more because they wanted
to reduce the numbers due to less bilateral matches this year. I
think he will be given one last chance to impress here. Due to
his age, Saggers needs to start getting overseas appointments
soon if he is any chance to make the elite panel.

I think Koch going over to umpire in the Ranji Trophy is
probably a fairly strong endorsement. Beyond that, it's really
hard to tell- I think Rusere might be out of contention at least
for the time being having had his chances. There aren't many tea
leaves to read so to speak given beyond the Emerging Panel most
of the appointments to the WCL etc seem to be mainly based on
geographic proximity

My Predictions of Umpires other than 12 Elite Panel Umpires & 4
Emerging Panel Umpires are:
1. Leslie Reifer [WI]
2. Langton Rusere [ZIM]
(or)
Iknow Chabi [ZIM]
3. Ahmad Shah Pakteen [AFG]
4. Masudur Rahman [BAN]
(or)
Prageeth Rambukwella [SL]
