Robin Whitfield |

Sad to report the passing, at the age of 81 of Robin Whitfield, |
|
former Widnes Rugby League player, with subsequent spells at |
|
Barrow and Huyton. Despite being sent off seven times in his |
|
career, he turned to refereeing and rapidly rose to the top. He |
|
refereed three Challenge Cup finals in the eighties and early |
|
nineties as well as international fixtures, before reaching |
|
retirement age in 1994. A very fine referee indeed. |

Sad to hear, an excellent referee. By my reckoning the game has |
|
lost 4 of its legendary referees in the last 4 years - |
|
Whitfield, Fred Lindop, Billy Thompson and John Holdsworth. |
|
I know it�s not always helpful to compare refs from different |
|
generations but the current crop can�t hold a light to these |
|
guys in my opinion. |
