Austria v France: Mazano
By: Adam Date: June 17, 2024, 3:50 pm

Terrible handling of mbappes broken nose. The goalkeeper was
waving his hands at the linesman and he somehow didn't see it.
Poor teamwork. Also evident gamesmanship such as that with
mbappe going back on to delay the game needs be punished.

GIL MANZANO - Austria v France
By: TheThingFromLewes Date: June 17, 2024, 3:51 pm

A really messy ending to proceedings and Mbappe deservedly
carded for returning to the field without permission after
breaking his nose. That said, why play wasnt stopped straight
away was poor from the officials.
Lots of niggly stoppages, diving around and tetchy behaviour
from both sides.
Thought Gil Manzano was a little quick to the cards, some of
which were a tad harsh.
Just didnt feel he had complete control of the match and his
performance reminds me of how another Spanish official Lahoz
officiated matches in the past, in that you never knew what was
going to happen next.

The whole team haven't been at their best this evening. There
was a really poor corner kick/goal kick decision going against
Austria not too long before the French goal. Cards have started
being waved round like confetti towards the end of the game,
some deserved but some a bit harsh. The Mbappe situation was
farcical, and while the yellow card for Mbappe was deserved, the
French should have been allowed to make their substitution
before play continued. The fourth official has looked a little
flustered at times this evening as well.

A few cards given that could have perhaps been managed, but most
were technical and unavoidable (yellows for studs on feet;
stopping promising attacks etc.)
The Mbappe injury wasnt obvious in real time and Austria
countered immediately. Obviously looks imperfect with hindsight,
but it wasnt a huge delay.
The re-entry into the field of play was certainly novel - dont
see that very often.
I presume there was never any doubt in him being subbed, but the
debacle was one of Frances creation. He was down in the 87th
minute and had been for a couple of minutes, and its obvious
hes had a significant head injury - and no one ready to make
the sub, thereby forcing Mbappe to stop the game.
Amateur by the French. Enjoyable game otherwise.

Perhaps its just me but Spanish officials do turn matches into
unnecessary card fests through lack of control and poor decision
making which doesnt help the mood of the players on the field.
Lahoz was dreadful when he lost control of matches in the past,
and Velasco Carballo didnt fill me with confidence when he was
in the middle.

The yellow card for the foul on the keeper against the
Austrian attacker was a very poor decision. IMO. Not a great
night for an over fussy official

The yellow card was for the follow through on the keeper
described as reckless by the var expert on itv.
Thought Manzanio was all over the place, probably the worst
performance so far but have to admit i didnt the first game
today.
Missy bmbs naughty step must have been closed for re painting, i
guess it will re open when Kovacs appears for the first
time😂😂

That was as clear a caution as youll see all tournament.
Just because Danny Murphy thinks the attacker has to go for
that doesnt mean hes allowed to go feet first into the
goalkeeper.
Its interesting to see weve finally caught up to tackles like
Porteous be accepted as SFP without argument, but challenges
feet first into goalkeepers isnt there yet

Why should an outfield player have to adjust their game just
because they are facing the goalkeeper? He slid in, both legs
and feet on the floor, played the ball with the laces, hooking
it towards goal, at which point the GK arrives taking the front
of the boot to the chest, whilst both players are prone. If that
had been a defender would the same call be made? I guess its
always going to be a free kick but a yellow card?

Well, sliding into a goalkeeper is always going to be high risk
since they dont have the same opportunity to protect
themselves. Every player is responsible for where their body
goes, and if you go feet first into the ball where you know a
goalkeeper is going to be, it is solely your responsibility to
ensure youre not following through into them. The attacker did
not do enough to pull out of the challenge to reduce the
reckless nature of it - it was more luck than judgement that
studs didnt make impact with the goalkeepers head.
Thats not any different from doing the same thing to a defender
in the same position, but there is even less defensibility given
that the goalkeepers position is entirely predictable.
It was a reckless challenge - caution absolutely correct in my
opinion.
