F.A. Cup Final referee 1890-91
By: John Treleven Date: June 6, 2024, 9:40 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Major (later Sir) Francis Marindin had refereed the F.A. Cup
final 9 times (1880 & 1884-90 including the 1886 replay).
He was appointed to a First Round fixture the following season
(Crusaders of Leyton v Birmingham St. George) on 17th January
1891 but declined and appears to have retired from top class
refereeing as he was now 52. He did appear occasionally over the
next three seasons at lower levels and died in 1900 shortly
before his 62nd birthday.
His successor as cup final referee was due to have been Charles
John Clegg (also to be knighted) who had refereed the 1882 final
and had also acted as an umpire (they became linesmen the
following season) at the cup final on five occasions (1886-89
inc. the 1886 replay). The match was Blackburn Rovers (the
holders) v Notts County at Kennington Oval on Saturday 21st
March 1891.
However he withdrew the day before the match due to a "family
bereavement". No details were given but it was his sister in law
Ethel Maud Clegg, nee Wicks, wife of his younger brother Leonard
(who like his brothers had played for Sheffield F.C.). They had
married in 1890 and Ethel died on Thursday 19th, aged 23, seven
days after giving birth to their only child, Ethel Theodora.
Leonard was to re-marry in 1896 (Kate Turton) and died aged 72
in 1939. Ethel Theodora married Thomas Leafe in 1920 and died in
1972.
Charles James Hughes of Northwich, one of the appointed umpires,
was "promoted" to referee the final. His younger brother,
William Henry, also acted as an umpire in the earlier rounds of
the competition. Thomas Gunning of Wandsworth was brought in as
the replacement umpire to accompany William Henry Jope of
Wednesbury (but born in Plymouth). Blackburn Rovers retained the
trophy, 3-1.
Clegg returned to referee the F.A. Cup final of 1892, Hughes
refereed the 1893 and 1894 finals with Gunning a (now) linesman
in 1893 and Gunning refereeing the first F.A. Amateur Cup final
in 1894.
