Division 1 Appointments 1947-48 - Analysis

Now that the research (on another thread) has gone as far as it
can for now
I have had a look at the appointments
431 of the 462 referees have been found
That is 231 pairs of matches (A v B and B v A)
7 pairs are missing the referee for both matches
17 pairs are missing one or the other match
207 pairs are complete
Of those 207
186 (90%) had the same referee for both matches
Of the 21 that did not, 14 were late season (last 6 weeks)
changes
Of the 431 matches found
319 (74%) were full referees
112 (26%) were supplementary
43 of the 45 full referees officiated in Division 1
33 of the 50 supplementaries did so
It appears that those living in the South did far fewer Division
1 matches

So far 335 matches of 462 have had their linesmen found
In 86 (25%) cases a Supplementary referee was the senior
linesman
38 of the 50 Supplementaries acted as a linesman
No pattern is apparent other than the Southern based ones again
fared worse
probably because the constituent clubs were predominantly
Northern
Columns

It must have been hard though when the vast majority of the
teams were all up north?

Now adding in the Linesmen
Senior Line (Blue & White flag)
335 are known, 86 were taken by supplementaries
The remaining 249 were taken by 143 of the 242 linesmen
(including 3 that were promoted mid season)
Junior Line (Red & White flag)
335 known, 52 more linesmen who did not take a Senior Line, took
a Junior one
A further 47, generally in the geographic "outposts"
(South-West, Wales etc.) did not take any Division 1 lines
The list also shows where they officiated (Ar = Arsenal, AV =
Aston Villa etc.)
They were geographically limited with only Donaldson and P.
Martin appearing both north and south after mid-season housing
moves
Those in the South had just Arsenal, Charlton, Chelsea and
Portsmouth to visit
Those in the North-East were limited to Middlesbrough and
Sunderland
