Re: Officials Football League Division 1 in season 1949/50.
By: John Treleven Date: July 22, 2021, 8:08 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The research continued once his forename had been ascertained
Frederick Charles Dark "Fred" Williams
born 29th October 1909 Plymouth
married Q4 1935 Plymouth
to Edna Partridge Mole (b 22 Nov 1910 Plymouth)
One child - Brian J. born & died Q3 1939
29th Sept 1939 living at 64 Victoria Road, Stoke Damerel,
Plymouth
along with her parents (Joseph H b 18 Apr 1875, a retired iron
caulker and Elizabeth J b 3 Aug 1873)
when Fred was a Master Blacksmith at the Royal Naval Armament
Depot at Bull Point, Plymouth
Fred & Edna must have separated as she is later listed as Murphy
but I cannot find a marriage for that
Later still she is listed as Williams again and died as such in
Northampton in April 1996
She possibly re-married to Leo Frank Williams (Q3 1903 Honiton,
Devon - Q4 1963 Gosport, Hampshire)
at Westminster Q3 1962 in which case she was widowed in just
over a year
In 1946-47 Frank is listed as a F.L. linesman living at 133
Pasley Street, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth
For 47-48 and 48-49 he is still a line but has relocated to 8
South Parks Road, Oxford
For 49-50 and 50-51 still a line but has moved to The Lodge,
Osney Lane, Oxford
For 51-52, 52-53 and 53-54 he is a Supplementary Referee at the
same address
For 54-55 only he is a Full Referee still at the same address
He died in 1991, aged 81, in Oxford

Arthur Smith of Aldershot is perhaps of some interest as it was
he - as a supplementary ref (1st season) - who refereed
non-league Yeovil's epic 2-1 win over Div 1 giants Sunderland in
a FA Cup 4th round tie on 29th Jan 1949. Yeovil's run in the FA
Cup came to a crashing conclusion in the 5th round with a 0-8
defeat at Man Utd. The ref for this tie was Alf Bond of London,
who was - amazingly - also a supplementary ref at the time, but
went on as a full ref to referee the FA Cup Final in 1956.
