[ Work in Progress ]
Please contribute to this work by posting information you have
about this subject. Your contributions will help make more
information available for more students like yourself.
This information is incomplete, and should not be used for
reference material. It should be continuously refined until it
is no longer under work.
When one attempts to discover the source of the power of magick,
there are two ways of approaching the question:
Questions
1. - One is to determine the absolute purest source of that
power;
2. - The other is to determine what is the absolute purest
source to wield that power;
Answers
1. - The first one is easy: Existence stems from an infinite
source. Whether this source is still intact presently is
unknown. Existence is made of space, time and energy. Power is
energy in motion (time + energy). The world is a that which
exists within space (space + energy). The rules that govern
existence are the laws which the wise attempt to decipher
through science, philosophy and mysticism (space + time)
2. - The second one is a much more difficult question to answer.
First, we must understand some things about magick; magick is
power. Energy is what fuels magick, and time is what allows it
to change things. Space is the area which magick exists in. Thus
all three major components of existence are necessary for magick
to exist; no combination of two of them alone would allow magick
to exist alone.
The next things we must understand are a philosophical
understanding of power, aspects which empower the mage, and the
importance of the mage as a person and spirit.
A philosophical understanding of power
Magick isn't about strength of will alone. Power without
precision is misguided and pointless.
Will is only the tiniest aspect of magick; it may be the
foundation of many styles of magick, but it has never been the
only aspect of importance. If a bull is blind and goes raging in
a city, it has power; of that there is no question. But it has
absolutely no precision. Thus it's power is pointed at all
directions, leading towards the destructive results.
Power, in it's truest form isn't just about the ability to do
things; it's about being able to do the things you wish to see.
Doing things yourself is a certain degree of power, yes. But
politicians have power because they control others. Power can
therefore be classified in two forms; guided power and misguided
power. Misguided power is dangerous, as it does not fully
control that which it wields. Guided power is careful, accurate,
and it has a full understanding of that which it controls.
Aspects which empower the Mage
There is far more to magick than just will power alone.
- Knowledge;
- Understanding;
- Character;
- Wisdom;
- Enlightenment;
- Will power;
- Insight;
- Confidence;
- Belief;
- And others, even...
All those play a role in magickal power. Although these are not
the only aspects that play a role in the power of a mage, they
play more critical roles than most other aspects.
Knowledge is what sheds the mage of the ignorance of self. It
opens the eyes and lifts the spirit. It shows what truly is;
knowledge is our path towards truth. And the truth is the
ultimate source of power, misguided or otherwise.
Understanding... while knowledge is information turned useful
through interpretation, understanding is full aubsorption of
that knowledge into one's soul. It is the end product of the
refinement of knowledge into one's self. Understanding is better
than knowledge, however it isn't always as precise;
understanding gives you a vision of the truth, however use
knowledge to give you the precision you need. Use facts as
reference, as the spirit is not always as precise as the mind.
Character is how evolved as a person you are. Although the
measure of one's character can be defined by one's own self, I
prefer to analyze it in the opposite sense. Character is how
long-lasting and self-preserving all of society would adopt your
character. Violence has no place. Hate has no place.
Selfishness, corruption... all that would destroy a society is
exactly what you must destroy in your own character. Remember,
this is just about your character; not about your views on
religion, politics, or any other aspect. Just your interaction
with others, society, government and yourself.
Wisdom is the not how much knowledge you have. Rather it is how
well you use your knowledge for growth not only of self, but of
all things. Character and wisdom go hand in hand. Wisdom is the
result of character. Although one can have some wisdom without
much character, growth in character is almost always accompanied
by a growth in wisdom. Wisdom makes a mage respected; character
allows him to get along with the world around him. Learning from
past mistakes is a sign of wisdom, and is not to be confused
with wisdom itself. Wisdom is how fast you learn those lessons
and how thirsty you are for serious growth in character, self
and spirit.
Enlightenment is the end result of wisdom. As one grows wiser,
one also pursues more spiritual growth. And the highest
achievement in spiritual growth is enlightenment. Once one
treads a path of enlightenment, they continue down that path for
as long as their spirit holds true. If one stops mid-growth,
their intentions become corrupt, and their wisdom and
enlightenment are forever gone. And it will take far greater
pain, suffering and work for that one to regain his true path of
enlightenment... and his path will be a much harder one than if
that person had never tread a path of corruption.
Will power is the ability to bring forth energy and set it into
motion. However will power is only the raw strength of the push
of energy towards this physical realm. The pull and execution of
the prowess and skill in magick are done through other aspects,
mainly knowledge, understanding, insight and enlightenment.
Insight is what allows one to see the truth through a limited
amount of knowledge. At first it requires some study and
verification, but soon becomes true understanding. Insight that
leads to understanding is marvelous; it allows for the creation
of more knowledge. It can be used to bring others towards
understanding and truth, as well as one's self. Beware, though,
that this insight does not lead one towards corruption.
Confidence is what allows you to believe in yourself. It is the
strength of self, regarding your own certainty of what you say
and who you are. Confidence plays a critical role in magick, as
with no confidence the mage become simply a punk with some of
the weakest abilities in magick, as well as a weak in character.
Belief is not what you are certain about (guesses and whatnot).
It is about certainty that what you are doing will work in
magick; that no force in existence will come between you and
your objective. When you truly believe in your skills you will
become a great mage. This is the basis of Chaos Magick, one of
the simplest and easiest magickal styles in theory... but one of
the most difficult in practice. Faith is blind by choice; belief
is confidence in your actions, here and now, whenever and
wherever that "here and now" may be.
The importance of the Mage as person and spirit
There is a reason why magick exists at a physical level. In the
physical, we exist as bodies, and bodies alone cannot manipulate
the flow of magick... yet we are able to. There is a
quintessential part of our very being that is not physical, and
we call that part spirit and/or soul.
We live physical lives for a purpose. That purpose is to obtain
something in life that we could not through existence in a
purely spiritual sense. Be that pain, memories, experiences,
growth... something in this physical life is needed for the
spirit.
A mage learns to manipulate and bend the flow of magick through
the world. It is an innate sense of power, that which the mage
feels through his studies and practice. He is learning how to
use the laws of the world to change it. So, what is the purpose
of the human life of a mage?
A mage is here to grow in that which pertains to his growth.
These are the topics illustrated above. A mage grows in these,
as he is nearing a spiritual pursuit of things more subtle. The
great gurus, hermits and spiritual powers of the world are near
the end of their purpose on earth; as such they dedicate more
time and study to their end.
However magickal power is nothing compared to the importance of
the person that you are. A mage who is not a good person will
not lead towards success... his own corruption will devour and
destroy him. A good mage will do things which are good; the
great mage will do great things. The mage, as any other person,
chooses who he wishes to become; it takes work and persistence,
but it can be done; those of inflexible personality and
character will never grow as people. This is why the concept of
a god or being that does not change over time is so thoroughly
sad. A being that never grows will never be greater.
The word "Infinite" means no end, however in mathematics it
means a direction, of an unfathomable speed. Thus the belief in
an unchanging deity of any kind is fractured, limited (as well
as limiting), and insulting to any being dedicated towards any
real progress.
Conclusion
Power and precision together yield better results, and wielded
in the hands of an experienced and skilled mage, the power is
unfathomable.
