| What's wrong with my starter motor? | |

| Series 3 petrol SWB standard starter motor. | |
| Motor spins when you turn the key, but does not engage. with the | |
| engine. Bendix stuck I think. | |
| Just taken the motor off and can find nothing wrong. I guess | |
| just the buggering about getting it off has "unstuck" it. | |
| This has been ongoing for a year now. Fine in regular use, but | |
| leave it 2 weeks and it would not engage. Keep on and on trying | |
| ant it might free, or start it on the handle, go for a 20 mile | |
| run and the vibration has freed it up to now. | |
| But now off the motor and on the bench it all looks fine. the | |
| bendix is free to move up it's shaft, it appears to be | |
| lubricated with a bit of light oil. I guess i will just leave | |
| it untouched on the bench for 2 weeks to see if it sticks again. | |
| I don't want to put it back until i know it's not going to | |
| stick again. | |

| My 88 used to do that, I resigned myself to removing the starter | |
| motor once in a while, especially after wading in muddy stuff | |
| and giving it a good clean and lube. I can't remember what it | |
| was but I found some stuff designed for bikes that had PTFE in | |
| it which seemed to help. Fitting the 2.5 petrol with it's | |
| starter motor solved the problem. rofl | |

| Well I have witnessed on the bench what I thought was happening. | |
| Leave it a week and the bendix does not engage. Turn it by | |
| hand and it is stuck and frees almost with a "clunk" | |
| I noted the spiral shaft it spins on was coated with oil / | |
| grease. Not put there by me and not leaking oil as the rest of | |
| the motor and inside the bell housing is dry, somust have been | |
| put there by previous owner? | |
| I understand this should not be oiled or greased. So i have | |
| dried it thoroughly and repeating the wait 2 week test to see if | |
| it sticks again or not. | |
| In the mean time I have had the brush cover off and confirmed | |
| all brushes and comutator good and no work needed there. | |
| What, if anything should the spiral shaft the bendix spins on be | |
| lubricated with? | |
