Spare wires from coil
By: Cookie7354 Date: November 20, 2017, 3:16 pm

Hello all, Ive been doing some front lighting wires tidying up
as it was a nest of all sorts. Anyway I came across 4 wires, 2
under each front wing. One white was a thick white with black
trace and the other a black earth. I traced these back to the
coil to the output side which also feeds the dizzy.
Any idea why these wires would have been here and straight off
the coil?
Thanks in advance
Rich (series 3 petrol)

Hi Cookie,
The only thing I can think of would be to supply full voltage to
a ballasted coil, when the starter is operated.
A ballasted coil should be recognisable by two spades on the
battery side of the coil, with one of them being female (I think
the full 12 volt wire). At one time coils would have a label
saying BALLAST TYPE or STANDARD. I now buy my standard coils
from Paddock ... the postage might cost more than the coil, so
buy one as a spare, next time you place an order.
A Series Land Rover does not need ballast assisted starting, and
running a Series with a ballasted coil but no ballast will get
very hot, and burn the CB points very quickly ... the Ford 1100
X-flow engine in my boat managed about half a mile before I had
to bow-haul it back to its moorings. Difficult single handed
with only one rope (... you should pull the stern, use the
second rope to stop the bows hitting the opposite bank).
It is possible a PO (eg: Me) could have used the second live
spade terminal as ... er ... a live terminal for a radio, or
whatever.
If the spurious wiring was connected to the spade on the dizzy
side of the coil, it was probably an anti-theft device. A secret
switch would have connected it to earth ... everything appears
live, but there will be no spark. My mate bought a Triumph
Herald, cheap because the seller could not start it. Mate towed
it home, sat in the drivers seat to think, wonderd what the
little switch was for. Click! Brrrrmmmmm!.
I know nothing about electronic ignition.

Thank you for the great reply. Ive removed them all now and all
looks a great deal neater 😁

I found out by trial and error but it was for side repeaters in
the wings which had been removed >Htlr<

I can't see why an ignition coil would be related to a lighting
circuit. If you have a coil with 3 terminals in addition to the
HT output, then you have a coil intended for a vehicle with an
insulated "earth" return system ie the chassis is not being used
as a way of supplying one side of the vehicle's voltage supply.

I was thinking some sort of security device like 602's
acquaintance.
It was a popular 'trick' back in the day.
