Rochdale to Stirling - best route?
By: chippers Date: February 11, 2015, 10:55 am

It's 1970, and we're off to Stirling to visit Aunty Winnie for
Easter. But what is the best route? AA Map of the Road not much
help, plus some new motorways being built but not sure what's
open. So dad sends a sae off to the nice folks at the AA and a
fortnight later, a neatly typed route comes back. Apparently an
undulating road, industrial at each end. That's better - Tartan
rug, flask, nodding dog on board, we're off. Be glad when they
invent Satnav though.

Doesn't mention time, but its showing 207 1/2 miles, against
todays 233. Cross country to Preston (pre M61), M6, Southwaite
services was under construction - we used to stop at the
Lancaster space station for the view and a wee. (Drinks were too
dear and food shite). M74 and A8/9 Pretty much as today. Used to
take best part of 6 hours in a Morris Minor, fully loaded
including roof rack.
