Thames Ironworks 2 - 4 Golden Eagles FC
What a day to be an Eagles fan, their club have finally won the
big one on an intense final day of the season and earn some
redemption following last seasons disappointment. Going into
Saturdays matches, Eagles needed a win and hope for either a
draw between Sarnians and Kyushu Yakuza or a Yakuza win. Things
got off to a bad start for Eagles, who were playing Thames
Ironworks away, as Gil Ramoss 4th minute shot put the host in
front. Thankfully it only took 8 minutes for the visitors to
pull level through a Byran Prittwick header.
Eagles then took the lead on the quarter hour mark, after a
terrible mistake from Neville Poppy saw him put the ball in the
back of his own net, 2-1 to Eagles! Then disaster struck for
them as Pavel Chernyshev had to be substituted off with a rib
injury following a clash during a corner in the 34th minute.
Serbian striker Milos Potkozarač was sent in his place.
Ironworks were relentless and wouldnt give Eagles time on the
ball, their pressure paid off just before half time when Ramos
provided Fred Woodgate with a defence splitting pass and the
English forward put the ball passed Petter Andrewsen, 2-2. This
meant at half time the title was going to Sarnians, as their
game against Yakuza was 0-0.
Eagles came out for the second half with all cylinders firing
though and a couple of minute later, captain Angelo Nazari put
his team back in front. Although the Ironworks keeper R. Huolier
was pretty annoyed at himself for not doing better.
In the 56th minute news filtered through that Yakuza had taken
the lead, which mean Eagles would finish top on goal difference,
they would finished 2nd, while Sarnians would drop to 3rd. A
couple of minutes later, Amadeus Rahr thought he had grabbed a
fourth for his side, but he was offside. It wasnt the first
time the German centre-back thought he was a striker this
season.
He was then a bit unhappy to be taken off a minute later and
replaced with Campari Torr, but Dave Rosewell obviously also had
the KO cup final on his mind in a week or sos time. Daro
Bourrin was also replaced by Rodrigo Desbato. Then 8 minutes
later, Eagles put themselves firmly in control of the match as
Kai Matsumotos low cross was hammered home by Prittwick, 4-2 to
the visitors. And that was also the Englishmans 14th goal of
the season.
Eagles were able to control the last 20 or so minutes of the
game and came close to extending their lead, but the final 6 or
so minutes were very nervy as Sarnians equalised in their match
as the Eagles fans held their breath. However once the final
whistle went in the other game, the Eagles fans began to
celebrate. Then a few minutes later it was all over Boleyn
Grounds away stand erupted in celebration!
What a season, Mark and Tony and their teams were phenomenal
opponents and all three teams fought tooth and nail these past
30 games. I am really proud of the lads, they really deserve
this, they have worked hard and even though we had that rough
patch, they never lost the belief in themselves. Commented a
jubilant Dave Rosewell.
