Elmer's #5 Geared Model Steam Engine
By: krypto31337 Date: July 7, 2025, 9:44 pm

Here's my latest engine build, an Elmer's #5 Geared engine. It's
a model of a cyclodial steam (no crank) engine for which the
plans were published by Elmer Verberg in Modeltec magazine
around 40 years ago.

I bought the gears as cutting an internal gear without special
equipment is tedious and time consuming. The flywheel was
machined from a casting and the other engine parts were machined
from bar stock. No kit.

I used a piece of acrylic for the valve cover so you can see the
valve working. Because of this I will be sticking with
compressed air to make it run.

A short video with a couple different views of the working
engine.

Excellent craftsmanship..!!
I have always loved this clever design. It is mesmerizing,
almost hypnotic, to watch it run.

Thanks again guys! I got a lot of ideas from the folks at the
Model Engine Maker forum to make this engine better than my
last.
