Doll 511-3 restore
By: tsp2224 Date: July 6, 2024, 10:34 am

Hello, looking for recommendations for repainting a Doll 511-3
base & firebox. The base is painted a horrid color so want to
restore to original best I can.
Suggestions on paint type and should I use a primer?

Can you get under that "horrible" color to find what the
original color might have been?
BTW, I personally don't find that Blue to be horrible, but it
certainly doesn't look like anything that could be original.

The blue is not horrible, I guess it's more the reflective
pattern.
Hoping I can get under the paint, but may end up having to
remove all.

Wow, that's a beauty. Basically going for that look. I should be
able to match colors but the boiler is the tough part. Would
love to attempt "blueing" the boiler but not sure if I want to
deal with that.
Mine is missing the governor assy and whistle, but runs great! I
have to replace the site glass but that's not an issue.

Restore coming along nicely. Trying to decide on "bluing" the
boiler or not. Removed all prior paint from the base & catwalks,
had no idea the catwalks & rails are brass...what a surprise!
Can't imagine why anyone would paint over the brass. Does anyone
know what this valve is for? No threads so probably not for a
whistle. Odd this engine doesn't have a whistle.

Nice progress.
If you are looking for a product to patina the boiler you might
consider Jax; Brown; Brass, Bronze & Copper Darkener.

Dolls....gotta luv em!
My Doll has a whistle to the left of the top of
the sightglass. The hole on top of the boiler at
the sightglass end is used by a 'weighted' S/V.
I added a video of it running.

Good luck,
