((OOC: Sorry; reply incoming; just want to take the time to
write better dialogue.))
Albrecht Dietrich zur Linde raised his palms with a laugh: "No,
no, of course it is not too personal. I'm not so easily
offended, and I can answer that easily: I want for my People to
be happy, as I suppose any sovereign ought."
He lit another cigarette. "Of course I know that is more
complicated than it seems. It means security, and prosperity,
and much else. The 'else' I think we have provided for by our
social policy, with cultural and social unity, but security
means a strong military, and prosperity means a a strong
infrastructure, and trade, and self-sufficiency, which in turn
mean, well ... "
Zur Linde took another drink of his schnapps, and raised the
glass. "Are you sure you want nothing? Well, I'll share with you
something quite personal, if you don't mind. Don't worry, it has
some bearing on what I propose."
"I did not make myself Reichsfhrer-General; I was nominated to
this position by my predecessor. I suppose, on the basis of my
conviction, and my service in the Waffen-SS 'Stolz der Nation'."
He took another, deeper swig of his drink, finishing it, and
moved to refill it at the small office bar. "To be entirely
honest, this visit has me a bit nervous, since those qualities
don't include diplomacy or statecraft, and a visit from a
personage of your stature is a bit rare." He almost seemed to
blush, then took on a deliberate expression, as if with a great
effort.
"It was about two years ago; the Christian Evangelicals decided
that the Reich was heathen or pagan, and sought to establish a
theocracy in the West. You have to understand, in spite of our
history, that kind of secessionism is not compatible with the
ideals of the Reich, and so, of course, we had to put down the
rebellion."
Zur Linde swept a hand over his hair and lowered his eyes,
drinking more, before recounting: "We drove and marched into the
wooded hills and mountains. There was a ... scharfschtzerin ...
a sniper girl? Nine of my men and one sanitterin were lost. She
was very good; she knew the ... medics? ... were honor bound to
help the wounded. Charlotte, my secretary, was with me -- a
medic then. I had to order two men to hold her down to keep her
going out."
"When we found where the fire was coming from, I took some men
and we crawled on our elbows through the woods and rocks, until
we got behind her."
"She couldn't have been older than Charlotte herself. She was
wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and looking down a deer rifle. I
looked at her through the sight of my rifle. I must have stepped
on a branch or something; she looked up. There was no fear at
all in her eyes. I think it was hate. I filled her with a burst
of fire."
"She still crawled for her weapon. I ran up and stepped on her
wrist; I remember thinking it was very delicate, under my boot.
Then I drew my dagger and finished her cleanly, here:" Zur Linde
lowered his head and tapped the point just under the base of his
skull.
"I still have it; that dagger. I wear it every day, even though
I would often rather not -- here." He drew the knife from his
belt and laid it on his desk. It was engraved immaculately with
the motto of the Reich.
"Meine Ehre heit Treue." He looked aside, smiles lost. "I
learned it is a burden as well as an honor."
"I tell you this so you won't think that I take war lightly. And
my proposal to you, considering the security of the Reich, and
the happiness of der Volk, is this: That if either of our
nations should go to war, for whatever reason, we will, none the
less, never make war upon one another, in perpetuity."
"And there are trade terms. We will of course sell and buy at
market value without tariffs or duties and so on. And if you
have specific needs, we can offer perhaps better."

"The unfortunate conflict of war seems to make those who aspire
to greatness, or those destined to be great, to suffer through
it. As well as learn something of it." Helping himself to a shot
of whiskey from the bar, "Normally I don't drink but such a
situation, I think, would allow it." He took a shot of the
whiskey, rough and warm in his throat, and poured himself
another. "I think my title is rather misleading, His Excellency
or the President of Turkducken. Whichever you may prefer,
although first names are my personal preference when meeting
other people face to face. It is important to note that I was
elected, however I will attain this office for life, and in many
ways I suppose I was born to lead my people, but I do not
consider myself a hero as many of my people would like to
believe." He downed his second shot, he seemed to be focused on
something distant with dull glassy eyes, but then composed
himself and resumed eye contact, "I was born in war, literally,
and figuratively. In many ways it is what I know best, but I've
strived my very best to not fall into such conflicts again.
While Alliance may be a strong phrased word, I only hope that
our personal relationship will only grow in light of our mutual
non-aggression." He took a third shot of whiskey, "While I do
not know your diplomatic relationship with Confederate
Appalachia, I have heard news that we have recently opened
mutual military alliances and the joint construction of an
Inter-State Railroad. I would only hope to extend this offer to
you, and for your State to accept and join in this cooperative
construction." He looked down to remember a thought and began
again, "I would also like to ask any citizens of the Reich if
they have or had the desire to leave your State. For the purpose
of combating the current lack of workers available in my State,
as it stands the economic situations are ripe for investment and
the beginning of businesses in our State, however far too many
jobs and positions remain empty as we simply do not have the
working population to support them. This, I would think, would
be a sign of friendship between our States and would only hope
to encourage understanding between our State's unique culture
and customs."

At President Faraday's comment, zur Linde looked near to
blushing as he extended his hand again, and smiled abashedly.
"If you prefer it, then, your excellency, I'm afraid I'll have
to ask your first name. Albrecht, by the way."
***
"My mother was Amerikaner but, before that, all my ancestors
have been German, and my parents decided on a hereditary name.
My great grandfather Albrecht was killed in the Great War; I'm
told he died to a franc-tireur in the forests of Belgium. My
grandfather, Otto, was tried and convicted of war crimes by the
Soviets, and executed; it was the usual practice with any member
of the SS. My father was a teenager when he fled Europe."
Zur Linde coughed and poured himself another glass of schnapps
from the bar, clinking it against Faraday's with the traditional
toast: "Eine tausendjhrige Reich!"
"Anyway, I have to thank you for your sympathy, though I wasn't
playing for that." He chuckled. "And return it; I think I may
understand what you've been through, at least in part."
"And I also have to thank you for agreeing to my offer. For your
effort with Appalachia, if memory serves, the Reich has, and can
spare -- and I would like to spare -- at least ten billion marks
for your efforts to construct a rail network, and ..." he raised
his hands in pre-emptive protest; "... I expect nothing in
return. It would to our mutual economic benefit, and I don't
mind at all, even though I haven't met with any of their
diplomats, if part of that may be spent in linking to the lines
to Appalachia from both the Reich and your own State."
He paused and pressed the button on his intercom. "Charlotte,
wrdest du kommen sie hier und nehmen Diktat, bitte?" Zur Linde
nodded his head to Faraday. "I would rather have the pact and
other agreements written and signed as soon as possible, if you
don't mind, though this way you can hear the exact language,
and, please, of course take all the time you need to read the
copy."

"My name is Lance, nice to meet you Albrecht." He smiled warmly,
"I would like to see the written proposal as soon as it is
available, and what about the immigrants? Although not integral
to the finalization of this deal, it is of dire concern to my
State's economic security."

A crackle came from the intercom on zur Linde's desk, and
Charlotte caughed daintily before giving an enthusiastic
"Jawohl, Mein Fhrer!" Shortly she opened the door partway,
peeking through, and stepped forward with a nod from Albrecht.
She seated herself at a smaller desk against the side wall,
opposite the bar, with an old-fashioned typewriter, and looked
to the Reichsfhrer. Zur Linde stood with his drink,
extinguishing his cigarette with a nod of deference and a brief
smile to the secretary, and began pacing.
Before beginning his dictation, he looked quizzically at Lance.
"Ah, yes, of course our citizens can emigrate to your State if
they wish; that's always been our policy. We don't make our
country a prison as though we were some heartless Bolshevists. I
do confess our borders are not entirely open in the other
direction, but, then, I am told that is not an uncommon policy,
in the NCSA or the world at large."
"Still, if you would like, and since it would make no real
difference, we can include it in the agreement explicitly. And,
more than that, we could encourage any Reichsamerikaner who
would like to leave our country ..." He twisted his lips and
furrowed his brow; "... though I don't quite understand why they
would do so, at this point. And I do believe all the untermensch
have already willingly departed, but, well ..."
He coughed and smiled at the president apologetically, then
began.
As he spoke, Charlotte rattled away at her keys, faster than zur
Linde could speak.
"Upon the sage advice ..."; zur Linde shook his head and waved
his hands; "No, please strike that, I'd rather not compliment
myself. Beginning again:
Upon the advice of the advice of the Reichsfhrer-General, in
the interest of der Volk, we the Reichstag hereby ratify this
treaty with the State of Turkducken, with the mutual approval of
His Excellency, President Faraday, which establishes the
following:
First, that trade conducted with the State of Turkducken will be
free of any excises, tariffs, or duties.
Second, that such goods as may be supplied to the Reich by the
State of Turkducken, by the necessity or desire of der Volk, to
improve their quality of life or to maintain staple supplies,
shall be traded with that State before any other. The State of
Turkducken will likewise extend the same courtesy to the
Amerikanisches Reich, in the interest of mutual prosperity.
Third, that in time of war, embarked upon by the Reich, the
State of Turkducken, or both, no hostilities shall be initiated
between the Reich and the State of Turkducken under any
circumstances.
Fourth, that any citizens of the Reich who desire to emigrate,
or non-citizens compelled to emigrate under the
Rassenkundeabteilung Exclusion Act, will be encouraged to choose
the State of Turkducken as their destination, in order to
augment its workforce and populate its territories.
In the Reichstag
Unanimously approved on
The sixth of August of the Year 2015
Further ratified by ..."
"Please leave ample room for signatures here, if you would,
Charlotte."
"Further ratified by Reichsfhrer-General Albrecht Dietrich zur
Linde, and His Excellency, President Faraday of the State of
Turkducken."
Sighing slightly as he finished, he looked to Lance: "Is that
satisfactory? If so ..."; he gestured to Charlotte, who blew on
the pages fastidiously to dry the ink before placing them on zur
Linde's grander, but fairly bare, desk; "... please sign here."
As he spoke, the Reichsfhrer rolled a heavy, carved
Reichsadler-and-Swastika stamp in red ink and struck it against
the bottom of the typewritten page as he smiled graciously at
his secretary, who blushed and looked at her desk in return.
"Vielen dank, meine kleine Charlotte."
"Natrlich, Al- ..."; she coughed; "Mein Fhrer."
Zur Linde turned back to President Faraday, a redness in his
cheeks showing a bit of embarrassment at that exchange, though
he swiftly cleared his throat and adopted a businesslike manner.
"Now, we have more to discuss. There is talk of war, and, for
your sake, the Reichstag has issued a declaration and the
Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht are now preparing to depart to strike at
Columbia. If we are to be comrades-in-arms, we ought to have
open communications and be frank about our strategies and
tactics, I think."

"If I am to be frank Frer, I do not know what my State hopes to
accomplish in this war. We are ill prepared for foreign
conflict, we had just started to build a Navy, and we have a
very limited Air Force. Also without transportation to the
front, my Volunteers will either have to walk, or wait for the
conflict to come to our borders. In more tactical terms, we hope
to survive and protect the Capitol, as well as our own State. I
personally hope that my people see as little war as possible,
they have suffered enough." The expression on the President's
face was grim, he was being brutally honest about his situation.

Reichsfhrer zur Linde listened carefully and peaked his
fingertips with his elbows on his desk, leaning forward and
momentarily lost in inner thought.
"That I can certainly understand, Herr President ... ah, Lance.
When it comes to matters of strategy, we must recognize and come
to terms with our limitations, of course. Fortunately, the Reich
has long-range, heavy air transport, and I do believe it is my
imperative to take the fight to the enemy. The SS and Wehrmacht
have never hesitated to attack an enemy, and under my guidance
will not -- cannot -- do so now."
He paused again, lighting another cigarette and exchanging a
glance with Charlotte that might have been endearing, or
adversarial; it was quite unclear. In her turn, she frowned and
blushed simultaneously. After that odd moment had passed, zur
Linde walked to an odd world map: The States of the NCSA were
clearly delineated, but anyone who could read German would see
that large swathes of the rest of the world were labelled either
"untermensch", "capitalist", or "bolshevist", though national
boundaries were clear.
"It will require us to violate the airspace of Hightah, you see,
but I am willing to take the chance; I do not expect a protest
or any resistance from that State. If you are likewise willing
-- and you may follow us and decide based on the results -- we
can make our A400M aircraft available to your own ground forces
and ferry them to the theatre, including armor. We will
certainly leave sufficient defense forces -- Kriegsmarine,
Luftwaffe, and SS, with air defense batteries and reserve
squadrons of fighters -- to defend der Vaterland, and expect you
would do no less. However, any forces you could spare to bring
the war to the enemy will certainly ensure that it does not come
to us, gods willing."

The President contemplated this for a while, looking out of (I
presume) windows of the office. "I have 30,000 men and women who
are available to deploy, along with another 30,000 in reserve.
That would comprise the First Regional Divisional Army, the 2nd
Army of Peace will remain to defend the State, while the 5th
Army of Conquest is under the command of the Secretary of
Defense and is coordinating protection with the NCSA Army along
with DEN's SS squadrons. While my existing Navy is not
substantial enough to combat, lets say, West Phoenicia's Navy.
Our ships are small enough to sail and navigate up the rivers
into Columbia." Standing to fix himself another glass of
whiskey, he began another thought. "Frer, while Columbia is the
instigator of this conflict, it is important to note that other
State's have thrown themselves into this conflict with military
support, in particular West Phoenicia is a very large State that
has openly supported the separatists, and as it stands provide a
much larger and pressing threat to our territorial sovereignty.
Surely you've heard the initial reports of the butchering they
dished out to DEN's Soldiers? Not to mention the slaughter of
the ConFederal Agents. I would impose that they should be our
first target, it is concerning I should note that West Phoenicia
is a much larger State than either of ours combined. Let alone
their sizable Navy and impressive Air Force. It would be a great
challenge to engage them on any front." He handed the Frer a
dossier on the relevant information, the implications
were...concerning.
