| Thiazide diuretics | |

| MS sometimes involves "gravitational edema," or so I was told | |
| long ago when I ran across a photo of someone with it who looked | |
| a bit like me and I asked the neuro about it. Fluid collects and | |
| you swell up. | |
| Over many years I've been taking a thiazide diuretic to remedy | |
| this problem. I get fewer vision problems and better mobility | |
| from taking it, spread out in small doses over 24 hours. | |
| Amazingly too it seems to help to prevent kidney stones. | |
| For some time now I've been getting along on a reduced dosage of | |
| it--from 100 mg/day to 50mg/day, and once again now I'm reducing | |
| the dosage, down to 37.5mg/day. I'm taking that in the form of | |
| 12.5 mg 3 times in 24 hours, spread out at intervals of | |
| approximately 8 hours. | |
| If I swell up too much or have even the slightest sign of kidney | |
| stone pain, I'm apt to resume the old dosage. | |
| Kidney stone pain is one of the worst kinds of pain I've ever | |
| had. | |
| I'm not recommending this medicine (hydrochlorothiazide is the | |
| one I'm on now but there are others that have similar effects) | |
| to anyone with MS. But it has helped me. | |

| It's been almost a month now since I reduced the HCTZ dosage by | |
| 12.5mg. So far, so good. | |
| In fact, I feel somewhat stronger. Or maybe it is just that | |
| there haven't been any major spells of hot weather lately. | |
| I did have a couple of abnormal lab test results that were | |
| significant enough for the doctor to propose a drug to help with | |
| proteinuria. | |
| I had proteinuria only just before being diagnosed with Type 2 | |
| diabetes, many years ago. The tests have been normal ever | |
| since--and so this abnormal test result is surprising. It might | |
| or might not have some connection with the change in the HCTZ | |
| dosage. | |
| I haven't yet learned what drug is being considered but have let | |
| the doctor know that I'd like to wait a while and see if I can | |
| have a normal test result after a while. | |
| I'm of the opinion--and some experts are of the same | |
| opinion--that people my age should probably be very cautious | |
| about starting any new drug. | |
