The homeless crisis in the US |

This kind of scene is very common on the streets of the city |
|
where I live--and in many other US cities, and homelessness is a |
|
national disgrace. |
|
Only some of the homeless are drug addicts or mentally troubled |
|
people. Many are people with families. Some have their pets with |
|
them. Those in tents and other encampments are just some of the |
|
homeless among us. Many others are living in vehicles. |
|
Property owners have been permitted to charge outrageous rents |
|
and to slap on extraordinary fees, making it almost impossible |
|
for a low-income person to afford even a minimal rental unit. |
|
This has been going on for a long time and the situation has |
|
been worsening. |
|
I'm using this space today to put in a plea for more compassion |
|
for the homeless in our midst. If you've ever faced homelessness |
|
as even a remote possibility, you will have had some notion of |
|
how catastrophic a situation it is to find yourself without |
|
shelter. |
|
Please do what you can to help put an end to this calamitous |
|
situation. |
