Do message boards have to disappear?

Recently I've watched several message boards dwindle down and
sometimes disappear. An MS message board, MS World, has shut
down after over 20 years of enjoying considerable popularity. A
couple of other MS and neurology boards are down to only a
handful of members. A movie discussion message board that once
had about 100 active participants a day has closed.
It is said that people find Facebook and other social media
sites more interesting. That is where they are spending their
time.
One has to wonder why. Most social media sites aren't set up for
communicating very detailed information or for having very
meaningful conversations. Interchanges tend to be brief and
fast--with all too many misunderstandings.
Compared to various typical blogs, MS Speaks is heavy on the
information but has very little visual appeal. It would be
pepped up with far more graphics: colorful, eye-catching photos,
timely videos, maybe even some music.
It's what people are expecting--and getting--now.
Also, a message board and its posts just aren't very easy to
read on a cellphone. It's possible but it takes far more effort
than on a desktop or tablet. The enthusiasm for doing
everything on the cellphone isn't waning.
So, given this situation, what will become of MS Speaks?
I'm in favor of keeping it as it is, even though it will
probably never be very popular. There's still something to be
said for sharing information even though there is hardly ever
any entertainment value in the way it is being shared.
So we're carrying on here--and the pruning of threads is
continuing, slowly but surely.
