Doing stuff to an old Bimmer...
By: audioscience10 Date: March 27, 2014, 1:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Alright so I'm bored so I'll start up one of these things. First
off my name is Nic and I live in Grand Blanc.
So I actually started building this around this time last year,
but it takes a while to do stuff when you don't have any fancy
machines and have to do everything by hand. This will be a quick
run down since its already posted elsewhere.
Bought this at the end of 2012 and drove it through the winter.

Knew right away I wanted to get a little crazy with it. So I
picked up this for parts.

First thought was just do a motor swap but I realized I wanted
to get into drifting so I decided I wanted the e36s suspension
too. So I pulled everything I wanted off the e36 and got rid of
the extra stuff.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1220.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
I built some subframe adapters for the front that would have a
rear mount for the lollipop.

[URL=

The steering shaft didn't quite reach with the factory dampener.

http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1322.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Next up was to do the rear. I decided easiest way was going the
be to use the stock e21 sub as the start of an adapter. The
problem is the trailing arms front mount locations on the e36
are wider than my whole car.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/2013-05-16_21-53-08-1.png.html]…
I did notice though that the stock trailing arm location was at
the right angle and I made the spacing right so the arm could be
the right length then I did this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1310.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
and this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1311.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
and this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1317.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
and wound up with this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1331.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Both sides done.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1337.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Next was to make room for my driveshaft to clear the subframe
adapter and reinforce it. A quick coat of paint and I was left
with this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1338.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1339.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Ready to go in.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1341.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Had to make a little clearance.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1348.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Welded in the rear mounts.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1363.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Sits a little rear of stock because of the length the trailing
arms needed to be to maintain geometry.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1353.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
So I did this and will be fixing it with some wide flares.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1366-1.jpg.html][IMG]http:/…
I decided since I wanted to use rear struts instead of the
divorced setup on the e36 so I went ahead and built camber arms
for the top instead of the bottom. I may end up reinforcing them
a bit more.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1369.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
My first plan was to mount the strut like this since the factory
e36 shock mount was way to far back to use the e21 strut tower,
but I think I've since changed my mind and will either be
building a new strut tower where I need it or going with a
cantilever setup.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1372.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
First plan was to use the m52 from the donor car so I went ahead
and mocked it all up.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/IMAG1393.jpg.html][IMG]http://i…
Then recently I got sick of screwing with the complicated mess
that is the BMW engine and bought this.
[URL=
http://s78.photobucket.com/user/higdon2k3/media/00s0s_lZ1qWDAi5_600x450.jpg.htm…
And that is pretty much how it sits right now. Next thing to do
is make an adapter to put the zf 5-speed behind the lq4. I don't
know how long it will actually last, though there are guys in
the BMW world getting close to 1000+hp with them and they are
way cheaper than a t56, so we will see how long it takes to blow
it up.
Oh and just for the heck of it one of my other bimmers.

That's ridiculous. What motor is that?

Thanks guys. I tell everyone I need to get to a real shop
because if I can do all this with hand tools, imagine what I
could do with proper equipment...

Ok I don't want to start a new build thread and my second car is
a Bimmer also. So since the v8 car is a long ways off I decided
that I needed to put something together so I can do some
drifting this year.
Well I had this laying around just waiting for me to do
something with it.
[URL=

I decided that it didn't quite have enough power in the current
state (125hp stock) so over the course of the last couple weeks
I did this.

Just a junkyard turbo, modified stock manifold, some scrap
tubing I had laying around, and a Volvo 240t fuel system. Some
crappy welding later and she breaks the tires loose in a
straight line shifting to 3rd.
I also have a spare diff for it that I welded up and spare
spindles that I'm thinking about modifying for more angle (the
car is manual steering tho and don't want to make it a pita to
steer by getting rid of my leverage.) I will for sure make sure
I get out to AutoCity next time.

Thanks Man.
So in the last few days of driving trying to get it where I want
it with the turbo I think I've decided that this particular
turbo is way too big on this 1.8l for my liking. Now maybe I'm
spoiled because my daily is a Solstice Gxp and has almost zero
lag, but this one hits 6psi at 6k and has trouble building over
6psi. That is way too slow for my liking. I do have a spare t3
with I think a 50 trim wheel that I think I'm gonna try.
On top of my lag issue I need to figure something out to stop me
from blowing my motor up since there is no rev limiter. I am
thinking I may just install a shift light that I have to grab
the tach signal and instead of having the light come on I am
going to trigger a couple of relays to kill fuel and spark. Or I
may use a spare throttle body and solenoid that is setup as
always open unless I go over a certain rpm then the solenoid
will close it and choke the engine until the rpms are under my
threshold.
And since an update should be accompanied by a picture, I
cleaned the front end up and broke out the rattle can...

I hope you're an engineer or at least going to school to be one
because the engineering and ingenuity into this shit is awesome.
Execution needs a little work but the ideas are f'in awesome.

thanks for the ccompliments man. am an engineering technician.
I know my execution needs work but I am working with very
limited tools and like 90% of the metal I use is
repurposed/salvaged, I buy very little as far as new steel. I
tell everyone if I had a machine shop and propertools iI would
be unstoppable.

So I've been busy and haven't had a chance to work on the car
lately. I figured I would swing by and share the new tow rig
with you guys though.

Now I just need to pick up a trailer.
