Good tires / Bad tires
By: Cavi Mike Date: February 27, 2015, 9:33 am

Just tried Uni-Royals for the first time - total fvcking
garbage. About 2 runs before they completely shredded, ripping
both my fender flares off. I'm gonna try to keep track of what
brands I use from now on and list them here. I had one set that
lasted me an entire event and the drive home but I don't
remember what brand they were, but give me your experiences too
and I'll put them here.
Good:
Kenda
Goodyear Eagle RS-A
Sailun Atrezzo SH402
Bad:
Uni-Royal

150hp FRS..
Definitely NOT a newb to drifting but definitely a newb to
events. Street/lot stuff doesn't count. I know a lot about car
setup in general for road racing/Autox stuff. A lot of things
apply to drifting. So i feel confident that I can dial in
suspension stuff as I progress.
Registered for Drift Indy 4/11 event to get some seat time
before NSB. What are some good tires to run? I have 18x9.5 rear
wheels, no stock spares so i will just pay the dude to switch
them out. (will prolly buy a set of rear spare 18's to make life
a little easier)
Plan on ordering a pallet of 225/40/18's in the next few days.
like 6-12 tires.
Cost isn't a HUGE deal but i'm not trying to break the bank.
Looking to make this order last me all of 4/11 and all of NSB.
whats some good rubberz dogs?
Thanks.

first of all good on you for buying new tires. It's a much
better way to go then wasting time grabbing used ones.
I've used Federal 595SS, Achilles ATR, Sunny S3800 and Wanli
something or another. My decisions have always been dictated by
price however.
For an FRS you don't want to go with something too grippy and
plan to run higher tire pressures to make it easier to slide.
235/40/18 or 225/40/18?? Might be a little rough for an FRS....

I completely forgot I started this thread, I just ran through 4
different brands of tires this past weekend and totally forgot
to document their performance.
For starters, you don't want to run wider tires than stock. That
car was equipped with 215's stock, and you're trying to break
traction, not grip harder, why would you want wider rubber? Stay
with 215's.
But I still whole-heartedly disagree that used tires are not
worth it, especially if you have to budget for tires. If you
don't mind blowing the money, by all means spend $70+ per tire,
plus shipping, plus mounting. But if you don't have the money,
you can get used tires with minimal wear for $70 out the door
per axle, and instead spend the money on some extra wheels
instead; because you can reuse wheels, not rubber.

The car I picked up came with aftermarket 18x9.5" wheels.
currently has 235/40/18's on it and I can get it to step out
with a good kick. Again, street sliding is no comparison to
trying to link corners, or flick the car in at 50-60mph
(Guessing for track events) I wanted to drop down to 17's and
run a 215/40, but i cant really find any decent wheels in 5x100.
Well, i could, but there's a wait, or they're $2000 However, i
was bebopin around the interwebz last night and i came across a
company that makes CR-kai reps. Dont get me wrong, I hate
knockoff anything, and its not like me to use that stuff.
BUUUUUTTT..
For less than $1200 i can get 6 of these bastards in 5x100
17x9+35 fitment shipped to my house. They look good, and will
most likely explode into a million pieces if i smash into
something with them. Which i know will happen because i'm
competitive and a little too risky... I'd rather replace a $150
wheel than a bunch of bent arms. By getting these this will
still leave me a good $6-800 for tires right off the bat
(looking for enough to get me through Grissom and NSB).
I think i'm gunna pull the trigger.. Im pretty sure a 215/40/17
is going to be a lot more fun than hucking around 225/40/18's on
a 18x9.5" wheel.
I can then sell the Forgstars easier, and put that money into
the tire pool or buy another pair of these wheels and a few more
tires. Or toss it into the S13 budget. I dunno.. I just want to
shred, but stil look cool-ish lol
1st world problems guys..
Thoughts?

$200 a piece for reps? That's not a deal man. And they most
certainly will explode like any other rep out there. You
shouldn't be paying much more than $100 a wheel for reps in a
17" but also, why do you want 9" wheels for 215/40's? Run 8's at
the most, that sidewall is too small for a 9" wheel, they're
gonna look like stance-fag wheels.

Meh, not to argue or anything but I don't think a 215 on a 9" is
THAT bad. I do think it's the limit though. As for the wheels,
that price was with shipping included to my house. They're about
$150-165 per wheel, and that's public sale. One of my line cards
may be able to find them cheaper. I'm not a fan of knockoff
wheels, but they do their job. Plenty of FD teams run
XXR/MB/Rota/Godspeed.
Kyle Mohan smashed his shit into the wall at LB last year. Wheel
exploded and maybe took out a break line, instead of holding and
bending up his suspension arms. Ryan Tuerk did the same thing
with those weird fifteen52 deals and his wheels exploded too.
1552 claimed they were "designed" to do that.. Mk. :/
Anyway, these two dudes run 215/40's in a 9" wheel and they
don't look super faggot stance, and this is honestly where the
choice to run 17x9" came from.

If I can find a set of good 5x100 17x9 in non asshole offsets,
or 5 week waiting period or $2000 I'll buy them.
If not I'll blow up a bunch of these Vordovens. $160 a wheel is
fuckin chicken pennies in the whole scheme of things. Not trying
to spend $1m on this stupid FRS when I'm working on another car.
I just want to go to as many events as possible and learn a
bunch this year. The important stuff Ill spend the money one ie.
Suspension/engine/safety.
I dunno. I should have just bought another track bike.

if you get on these guys instagram, they are always having good
deals, like a set of wheels for 650-700 shipped.

Those are actually the wheels I was looking at. Lol the Forme
9's it whatever. I can also get 5x100 17x9+35 RPF1's shipped for
a little over a grand. Gunna call around and see what kinda deal
I can get for 6 of them and if they have any in stock. If I can
get around the same deal for the enkies I'll go that route.

Finally found a good deal on 17x9" RPF1's. ordering 6 of them
Monday.
Ordering 10 Kendas, Federals, or Achilles Monday as well,
depending on stock.
Considering ordering 17x8+35's for the front and running a
spacer as well. I think i am going to order the Megan inner tie
rods for a little bit of extra angle, and with the wheel set up
I shouldn't have any issue with rubbing the frame rail.
Also picked up some subframe spacers, and solid steering rack
bushings from battle version. Just need to get it all on the car
before the first event.
I should start a build thread... do people still do that?
Anyone else driving the Drift Indy 4/11 event?
if so, lets hangz!
