| Nesting boxes | |

| In the nesting boxes, I have hay down for my girls. Can I also | |
| use the shavings that I used for the babies, or what other | |
| materials can be used in nesting boxes? | |

|
Lee, the pine shavings can be a bit dusty so I would
| recommend trying to separate some of the dust out before you put | |
| it in the nesting boxes. I have tried the shavings and my girls | |
| don't like it. I use a synthetic long fiber rug in the nesting | |
| boxes. It's easy to shake out and clean. | |

| I took one of the synthetic grass rugs (the fibers are about 1.5 | |
| inches deep) and cut it into sizes that fit into the bottom of | |
| the box. When I gather eggs, I just take them out as I go and | |
| shake them to clean up whatever happens to be in the box (poop, | |
| grass, feathers, ect..). If one gets soiled (and it doesn't | |
| just shake off) I take the water hose to it and then let it air | |
| dry. I have 4 boxes, so I take one of the hardly used mats and | |
| put that one into the frequently used box (of course that's the | |
| one that will normally get soiled). I can rotate the cleaning | |
| process like that too. Leave 3 clean 1. So, that way, they | |
| always have a choice of clean boxes to use. | |

|
I like that idea. I think I'll do that and put some hay
| on top. It'll cut down on how much hay I use, and be a l9t | |
| easier to clean. Thank you very much!!! | |
