| General chicken question ... | |
| By: Lee Goff Date: February 27, 2018, 11:41 pm | |

| Many chicks are born in a coop and not brought inside with heat | |
| lamps and such ... is it possible to get chicks from St. Elmo or | |
| TSC and just put them in the coop? | |

| Lee, | |
| The chicks from SEFS are less than a week old. They have been | |
| under a light since they arrived. Even tho the nights are mild | |
| to us, Chicks can get cold so fast. Think about if they were | |
| under their mama, it would be approx. 95 degrees. The nighttime | |
| temps are 65 and below. | |
| I keep a light or warmer plate on chicks until they are 6 wks | |
| or more , depending on the breed. Even then, I have it available | |
| if they want it. .Also a bucket on its side that they can get | |
| into and snuggle up. | |
| The red heat lamps are really too hot. A clamp light with a 60 | |
| watt bulb is is fine and can be adjusted. | |
| I have 3 wk old and younger chix in my spare bathroom. 4 wk old | |
| chix are outside in a crib with a lamp. I drape a blanket around | |
| a corner so they have a warm corner near the lamp to huddle in. | |
| A bucket nearby if they want to go in.. | |
| Even my 6 wk olds go in the bucket in another crib at night. | |
| Hope this answered your question | |
