Ameraucanas

IS YOUR AMERAUCANA GENUINE?
Probably not! “99 per cent of all Ameraucanas sold by feed
stores and hatcheries are actually Easter Eggers” That is
a composite statement from the Ameraucana Facebook page,
Ameraucana Breeders Club and Ameraucana Alliance. The
information presented here is from those sites.
I first became aware of the problem when I eagerly acquired my
so-called Ameraucana from a local feed store in February of
2016. As a researcher, I wanted to know more about the breed. I
learned there are 8 DIFFERENT VARIETIES: white, black, wheaton,
blue wheaton, red/brown, silver, splash and buff. When comparing
mine to each of those I quickly realized mine didn’t match
any. The more I researched the more I found most everyone in the
breeders clubs had been duped in the beginning also (its called
fraud). This is a nationwide problem and my goal is to have
everyone that will listen to be much better educated on the
subject so we as a local community will hold our sellers to
higher standards and be able to ask informed questions and have
high quality birds. If I had wanted an Easter Egger I would have
asked for one but I wanted an Ameraucana and did not get one. I
still like my EE but it’s not an Ameraucana but you can be
sure when I get the next one it will be of the highest true
quality. I have located the best breeders in the country and
made friends with several.
This is my analogy: If you went to buy a horse and they gave you
a mule and said it was a horse, would that be OK? Of course not!
While one of it’s parent is a horse, the offspring is
still a mule! Same with the chickens.
AMERAUCANAS DO NOT HAVE GREEN LEGS. If your’s does, then
you have an Easter Egger. An EE is not a breed but a
‘mutt’ category that lays colored eggs, even brown.
Ameraucanas lay only blue eggs, some with a green tint.
Ameraucanas have muffs and beard but no tufts. Yes, there is a
difference. Araucanas (not to be confused with Ameraucanas) have
tufts. They are rare.
WHAT VARIETY IS YOURS? No one I have asked this of that has one
can answer the question (excepting white or black and those are
suspicious). If you get a true Ameraucana, the seller can
usually tell you which variety and which breeder the stock came
from. ASK THEM! If they can’t answer that, then run away!
There are no breeders in our area that are listed on the
national registers. The closest is in Huntsville. I’ve
done a lot of checking on this in the 2 years I’ve been
doing this research.
There is ONLY ONE SPELLING of Ameraucana and owners that have
true ones know it. If you see other spellings by sellers, then
they are misrepresenting them. Tractor Supply was using
Amaricana to fool people (I have a photo of the sign). There is
no such breed. They have stopped as I understand because of
complaints of the breeder’s clubs. Most hatcheries use
other spellings such as Americana however my research says that
the local feed store got their’s from Ideal Poultry in
Texas. They use the correct spelling but they are not selling
true Ameraucana birds (see my picture and compare it to the 8
varieties on the breeders websites). While the local store is
probably just following what they are told and did nothing
intentionally, I hold them to a MUCH HIGHER STANDARD and they
should know better. I’m hoping they will learn and correct
in the future. I have found 2 national hatcheries who have
mended their ways and have true AM breeds at this time and list
the original breeder but it has just happened due to pressure
from the breeders clubs. Websites:

BUYER BEWARE! If you are looking for pure bred, BLUE egg-laying
chickens, you are not going to find them at a feed store or MOST
hatcheries REGARDLESS of which "A" name they invent for
them. Easter Eggers are a mix of breeds that can be found from
those sources, not pure breds. Learn the differences so you're
not duped into buying something you didn't know you were getting
(eg: a brown egg-layer, for instance) -->

This is what the feed store/hatchery Easter Egger sold to me as
an Ameraucana looks like. It does not match any of the 8
approved varieties. She's a wonderful chicken just not what I
thought I was buying. I'm posting this for educational purposes
so others can make informed choices.
