Mites and Scaly Legs
By: Travis Rayner Date: February 7, 2018, 7:41 am
---------------------------------------------------------
We have noticed an increase in scaly legs on one of our older
girls. This, along with most health conditions we have never
had to deal with, personally...so it is my turn to ask for
advice! Recommendations for kill and control would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

I spent the morning watching chickens and digging thru chicken
poop. Poop is clean! YAY! But, I have determined that some
girls have scaly leg mites. I thought at first it could be
because we have so much excess water standing here on the river
but I am treating it as it is mites. We were gone for 9 days on
a trip and the house sitter is not a chicken person.... so, when
we got back I scoured the coop and cleaned everything but I
think since I had loaded the poop tray with chopped hay (to soak
up excess poop and whatever) I may have introduced mites to the
coop. Five girls have scaly legs (either one or both) so I
soaked them in warm water with VetRX. Then I coated their legs
with VetRX and Vaseline. It was spa day at the Steel Magnolia!
The girls loved it so tomorrow I'll do it again. Afterward, I
wiped down the roost poles with a mixture of neem oil and hot
water. We are out of DE so I will get some tomorrow and add that
to their dusting spots. I also went next door and broke off a
camphor limb and beat the poles and inside of the coop with
that. Then, I stuck the branch under the poop tray. Trying to
stay all natural, but will re-evaluate if that is not effective.
