Wierd Weather

Around 12 December 2014
Over the last month or so Scotland (In my area) has had a wave
of very weird and unusual weather events (3 in total).
Here is the first one about Lightning hitting power lines over
5000 times and boy it was rather scary.....here is a statement
from the local news room.
"Lightning struck 5000 times across the Western Isles and
northern Scotland over a two day period during the weather
bomb, according to latest figures released by electricity
supplier, SSE.
An analysis of the electricity network shows that, on average,
there were just over 104 strikes each hour during the worst of
the storm.
Some of the most damaging strikes were on the Western Isles and
the Highlands.
Despite the gale force winds, and waves as tall as a six storey
building, lightning caused the most damage to the electricity
network."
We had a power outage on this occasion but not for too long.

This event brought us hailstones the size of marbles over a
period of about 5 minutes.
"The freak hailstone storm damaged windows and garage roofs in
the north of Lewis late on Thursday night. "
Car windows were smashed....One of suts aluminium blades also
looks a little like a peppered golf ball (sorry sut).

Wow ! but better the wing than you! From the sounds of it I am
glad we don't get weather like that. Has the windmill still
been turning or is it damaged to badly

This was the worst one of all.....This is taken from our local
news room again
"Hardly a street or village in the Western Isles escaped damage
as the violent storm left a scene of devastation in its wake.
Gusts of 113mph at low level ground were recorded at Stornoway
airport, said to be the highest for the recording station since
records began in 1970s.
Thousands of homes had slates whipped off in violent gusts,
often hammering into nearby parked cars.
Sheds were blown away, caravans and chalets flipped over, garage
roofs torn off and windows smashed in.
Gates were snapped off their hinges, glass and metal panels
tossed about, and fencing flattened."
Unfortunately I did not get away with this storm either....My
shed had its roof ripped off and my greenhouse well see the
picture and you get the idea.
Our next door neighbour has a steel shipping container as a shed
but that is now on its side...it flipped it.

@ sut
At the time of the hailstones it was tied of to stop it turning
due to the high winds at the time hence only one blade seems to
be pittered but during the 'real storm' I took both vawt and
hawt down....the vawt wings can be seen in the greenhouse
picture.
We had no power for around 24hrs but some other locals had to
wait 4 days to get power restored.

I couldn't figure out why the 175 wasn't turning today so I took
out a broom to give it a spin and low and behold it was stuck !
So I got out the ladder and lifted the mag plate and found dime
size pads of ice on magnets the rain and thaw must of caused it
to form under them, first time I have seen that but all better
now (except no wind )
