Here is what he said about that:
Matthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the
least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach
them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Exactly! The law had to be followed perfectly! There is no way
that, if one is following the law, that they can dismiss any of
them...or of course teach anyone else to do so. So, follow the
law...and make sure you can follow each one perfectly...without
leaving anyone of them out. Can't pick and choose which ones we
want to keep...as each are just as important as the rest. Or,
follow the law of Love that Jesus taught...the one new command
that covers and meets all the requirements of the law
anyway.
Jesus was teaching keeping even the minor rules
there. If they were all about love when properly understood,
how could you keep the Law of Love and break even a small one?
If someone says he wants to ignore this one or that one, he
would be saying there are areas in his life he doesn't want to
yield to the Law of Love.
I believe that (in a nut shell) one can follow the law,
and be a really good person...but not love. In fact I see this
all around me...that people will follow the laws of the land
exactly...yet they are still missing it.
That is what
the book of Job is about in large part. It's said he was
righteous; but it does not way he was either loving or wise.
He missed the whole point.
Many obey the laws...of the land or biblical...so they
don't get in trouble or feel guilty. It has nothing at all to do
with because they don't want to hurt anyone...or they want the
best for their fellow man. Also, many take pride in that they
follow all the rules...which causes some to be haughty, put
their noses up in the air and feel self-righteous. But, if one's
aim is to love....it becomes a whole different story...as it is
hard to be haughty then. It can make a big difference in one's
attitude. I believe this is what Jesus spoke about and
demonstrated...and essentially what He had against the
Pharisees.
So, when we aim to be lead by the Holy Spirit and love our
neighbor as ourselves, something happens inside our hearts...and
we begin hitting the target's bulls-eye...as we won't just be
trying to obey the rules...but much more. Because the laws will
naturally begin to be followed already when we begin thinking
about how to treat others the way we would want to be treated.
:-\ I bet I confused you more? Sorry...
No, I agree with
this. It's the reason Israel was told to write the Law on their
hearts. Not the manna or Aaron's rod -- but the Law of Love.
James 2: 8And if you fulfill The Written Law of God in
this, as it is written: "You shall love your neighbor as
yourself", you are doing well. 9But if you show partiality, you
are sinning, and you are reproved by The Written Law as
violators against The Written Law. 10For whoever keeps the whole
Written Law and slips in one thing, he is condemned by the
entire Law. 11For he who said, "Do not commit adultery", also
said, "You shall not murder." But if you are not committing
adultery, but you have murdered, you have become a violator of
The Law. 12So, be speaking and acting as a person who is going
to be judged by The Law of Liberty. 13The judgment is without
mercy against him who does not practice mercy, but with mercy,
you have dominion over judgment*.
Abstaining from adultery is a good first step if that is a
temptation; but it doesn't solve the problem. The real problem
is what makes us want to do "bad" things.
My desire would be to encourage you to dig deeper into
this...but it is not my number one intent to change your mind.
It is more to learn and the fun of exchanging ideas and gleaning
from them. So, to me not agreeing is ok if both can do it
without biting at each other...and just enjoy the rousing
conversation.
Anyway, I am interested in your thoughts about
reincarnation....as I have some questions for you. It is an
interesting subject...and I wanted to know, in light of
scripture...how you have come to believe in it...anyway, should
I ask you over there?
Over there would probably be
better. I can say this here though, I could remember past
lives and when I believed you couldn't be a Christian and
believe in reincarnation, I had trouble taking Christianity
seriously. The idea that when you die, you will go either to
heaven or hell and that's the end of the story seems like an
invention of priests to control people by terrorizing them into
obeying them. Some even say if you die in a certain state,
there's no hope for you.
We are told that people go straight to hell to burn and then
are left out to be judged only to be returned to hell again?
Does that make sense? Surely we'd think a judge who imposed a
jail sentence on someone before his trial was not quite right in
the head. I'd say the truth is that what we call "hell"
serves a good purpose -- burning away sinful things in between
lives. The flames of "gehinnom" or "purgatory" are the Flames
of Love which burn away flaws so they aren't permanent. The
idea of hell as punishment does not make sense to me.
