Ya, the optics are bad, if not the results yet. However, I
remain optimistic somewhat. I've watched Columbus play multiple
times and the way Berhalter set them up, they're always a pain
to play against by their marking. He went to more offense this
season. He's going to have to change his tactics for the
National Team since he's going to need goals, goal, goals, to
interest US soccer fans and win matches. In other words, it's
not the defense one likely should be concerned about. That's a
plus, considering the USMNT's last qualifier.

^ What is Antonio Conte doing? Nothing. He said he's not in a
rush to return to coaching but hinted at having some project
lined up in June. Why not approach him and other people with
better records? I think Conte would be great if the bigwigs
that run the national team wouldn't argue with him and would
just let him do what he wants to do. I think that because I
think a lot of his problems at Chelsea were caused by clashes
with Abramovich who wanted to make too many decisions.

http://www.espn.com/soccer/chelsea/story/3699445/antonio-conte-to-wait-for-next…
According to reports, Madrid considered appointing Conte as
successor to the sacked Julen Lopetegui last month, but turned
their attentions elsewhere amid concerns he would demand too
much power and antagonise a powerful dressing room with his
uncompromising style of management.
Speaking to Sky Italy, Conte hinted he did not feel Madrid was a
good fit and confirmed he wants to choose his next club
carefully.
"Hopping on a moving train is not good for top coaches and right
now, I don't feel the need to return immediately," Conte said.
"Maybe I'll change my mind in two or three months -- never say
never -- but today I'm really convinced that it's best to wait
for a project all of my own."
Sergio Ramos reportedly played a key role in Madrid cooling
their interest in Conte, voicing his concerns about him
privately to president Florentino Perez and pointedly asserting
publicly that "respect is won, it is not imposed" to Spanish
reporters when Conte was touted as a replacement for Lopetegui.
"We've always got to show education and respect when we arrive
at a new club, and the same has got to come back from the
players, because when these kind of things are lacking, that's
when you start having problems," Conte said.
It sounds to me as if Real's players are prima donnas and maybe
the people running it are too the way Abramovich was (in my
opinion). He might be a good fit with the US team. If not
him, someone else with a similar record of getting results.

Ya. Conte would at least light a fire in the USMNT! Berhalter
looks like he's been appointed funeral director.
One commentator suggested hiring Berhalter was another case of
American "exceptionalism". Let's keep it all American because we
know our athletes. Funny, though. Many play in Europe.
Ya, Real. It's Florentino Perez with the hand there. You might
cross your coach as a player there but cross Florentino and
bye-bye.
Well, Abramovich knows soccer and he has the titles to prove it.
I'm not so sure about the crew over here.
How about Tata Martino? He was awarded MLS Coach of The Year
last month and took a brand new club in two seasons to the MLS
Final this Saturday. His win % is over .600. Okay, so Argentina
didn't win the Copa America under him but he had a 9 wins, 3
losses, and 7 draws with the Albiceleste from 2014-2016. He
coached FC Barcelona from 2013-2014 with 40 wins, 11 draws, and
8 losses. He called that season a total disaster since Barca won
no titles. But that's the spirit I'd want in a coach for a
mediocre team not a babying one that's worried about whether his
Americans dig him. They dig him in Atlanta I've seen. A big and
I mean huge banner was unveiled by the fans in the stands with
his image on it the last match.
I'm not sure he was even offered an interview.

Okay, so Berhalter's up against Panama tonight at the University
of Phoenix (State Farm Stadium) with an all-MLS squad. It's a
friendly and his debut as new head-coach. I wouldn't put too
much stock in the result either way:
KEEPERS: Sean Johnson (New York City FC); Zack Steffen
(Columbus Crew SC);
DEFENDERS: Reggie Cannon (FC Dallas), Nick Lima (San Jose
Earthquakes), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Daniel Lovitz
(Montreal Impact/CAN), Mark McKenzie (Philadelphia Union),
Keegan Rosenberry (Colorado Rapids), Auston Trusty (Philadelphia
Union), Walker Zimmerman (LAFC)
MIDFIELDERS: Paul Arriola (D.C. United), Corey Baird (Real Salt
Lake), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC/CAN), Russell Canouse (D.C.
United), Marky Delgado (Toronto FC/CAN), Jonathan Lewis (New
York City FC), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Djordje Mihailovic
(Chicago Fire), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC), Wil Trapp
(Columbus Crew SC)
FORWARDS: Jeremy Ebobisse (Portland Timbers), Christian Ramirez
(LAFC), Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew SC)
They play Costa Rica on February 2 but the real test comes in
March when they meet Chile (friendly) on the 25th or 26th in the
USA somewhere.
My, how time flies.

I see it was US 3 Panana 0.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/soccer/takeaways-from-usmnts-3-0-win-over-pana…
The glorified scrimmage vibe in Glendale wasnt exactly helped
by the turnout at the cavernous home of the NFLs Arizona
Cardinals. Just 9,040 showed up to State Farm Stadium for this
one. Part of that is circumstances; B-team January exhibitions
havent drawn well in years. Much was down to the too-high
ticket prices the cheapest seats started at $32, with ones on
the lower level going for $100.
Most of it, however, has to do with the lingering apathy in the
U.S. fan base following the qualifying disaster. And thats fair
enough. Berhalter himself has said on multiple occasions since
being hired last month that its on him and his team to restore
faith among supporters by playing attractive soccer and winning
games.
I wonder how many fans came from Panama? They could have stayed
home and saw the Pope for free.

Ya, Pope for free. $100 for some seats seems kind of steep for
this match. Still, it's a win, something positive, yes? Better
than a loss or draw. Nicely done. Nice goals. Good on Berhalter
for a debut.
If perchance the USA wins the World Cup in Qatar, one can say
that they endured the ups and downs all the way from the
beginning. Now that's a real fan :)!

The USMNT v Costa Rica today (friendly) on regular ol' FOX
network 3:30 pm.
I'll likely try to watch and hope for a USA victory and a match
played in the beautiful manner.
C'mon USA. Shake it like Qataris :).

USA 2 Costa Rica 0. Goals from Sebastian LLetget (LA Galaxy) and
Paul Arriola (DC United). Slow first half. Great second.
Enthusiastic team. Camraderie.
FOX presentation LOUD, abrasive. Calm yourselves. The quality
will shine through anyway.
Ecuador and Chile in March.

[/quote]From the highlights I saw, I thought Costa Rica played
well overall. The header by LLetget for the USA was a
surprise. That was fast thinking on his part.
I'm not sure about the goal by Arriola. The Costa Rican
goaltender tried his best, but it may have been a mistake for
him to venture out so far -- don't know -- but he looked as if
he was pretty much alone in defending at that particular point
in time, and Arriola capitalized on it.
