Egyptian Cleric Says Female Mutilation Has Economic Benefits

Sheikh Abd Al-Wahhab Al-Maligi, an Egyptian cleric, appeared on
the Al-Seha Wal-Jamal TV channel this past March and argued that
female genital mutilation was perfectly fine because there was
an economic benefit to it.
He said this among other things:
The discussion about female circumcision goes back to the past
century. The first time that this subject was debated
extensively was in the past century. Who were the first to talk
about it? The Jews. They do not want Islam or the Muslims to be
pure, develop, and civilized, So they started talking about it.
In The Protocols of the Elders of Zion it is written: We must
strive for the collapse of morals, so that it will be easier for
us to dominate the world.
They tell you that female circumcision causes infertility. Says
who? How can female circumcision cause infertility?! Egyptian
women are circumcised, yet they give birth more than all the
other mothers in the world. So how can this cause infertility?
It is the uncircumcised women of Europe who are infertile. Allah
be praised!
Are there any economic benefits to female circumcision? Yes!
What are the economic benefits of female circumcision? Female
circumcision is a preventative medical measure. Someone who is
uncircumcised will be afflicted with many serious diseases,
which we will discuss later, Allah willing. Someone who
contracts one of these diseases must spend money, and the state
must spend money on his treatment, and so on. But we can save
all this money and direct it elsewhere. So this constitutes
preventative medicine.
Now he said that on an Egyptian television station; and female
circumcision is against the law in Egypt. Although the law is
often ignored, the Egyptian parliament toughened the penalties
last year.

Egypt has brought into effect an amended law that toughens
penalties on those who perform female genital mutilation, a
practice that reportedly affects over 90% of Egyptian women, the
health ministry announced.
The government this week told both state and privately-run
health facilities that medics who carry out the procedure could
now face up to 15 years in jail. Parents who subject their
daughters to circumcision could get a three-year prison
sentence.
"The prosecutor general issued a memo to all prosecutors,
emphasizing the importance of investigating all FGM cases,"
Mayssa Shawky, the deputy health minister, told CNN on Wednesday
by phone.
Before the amendment, the law defined FGM as a misdemeanour with
a maximum sentence of three years in prison. It was rarely
applied. Only two cases involving FGM-related deaths were
referred to court since the law was issued in 2008.
In light of the recent amendments, passed in the parliament in
August, FGM is now considered a felony, with a minimum penalty
of five years in prison.

As if his statements aren't already outrageous enough, he also
quotes the "Protocols of Zion" to attack the Jews; and surely he
should know that was a fake document.
Then, closer home, there is an Imam in Virginia who said it
prevents hyper-sexuality.

He was placed on leave.

Ali: A lot of work to do in stopping genital mutilation
A Virginia imam has been placed on leave after advocating for
the controversial practice of female genital mutilation.
Imam Shaker Elsayed of the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls
Church, Virginia, made the controversial comments on a video,
posted to the centers YouTube page, that has since been
removed. It was first picked up by Middle East Research Media
Institute (MEMRI), a non-profit that monitors and translates
Iranian and Arab television channels, as well as sermons in the
West.
This man is amazing. He seemed to be advocating terrorism back
in 2015 when talking to Ethiopians. I wonder why he wasn't
fired then?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cErDppxEuTM
I also wonder why he was investigated by the government.
Perhaps he was. I suppose his mosque was when a member of that
mosque was convicted of plotting to assassinate President Bush.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaker_Elsayed
Elsayed described the 2002 hunt by federal agents for evidence
against Sami Al-Arian as "a war on Muslim institutions."
Al-Arian ultimately made a plea agreement, pleading guilty to
conspiracy to help a "specially designated terrorist"
organization, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
When three defendants who were part of the Virginia Jihad
Network were convicted in March 2004 of conspiring to help wage
violent jihad in Kashmir and possibly against American troops in
Afghanistan, Elsayed said "It is evident that Muslims should not
expect justice. Muslims are besieged after 9/11, for no fault of
their own."
In April 2005 Ali Al-Timimi went on trial for treason for
verbally encouraging people to train for jihad and to attack the
US. Elsayed said: "He is not accused of anything except talking.
It's all about him saying something. If this isn't a First
Amendment issue, I don't know what is."
After Al-Timini's conviction, Elsayed said that "Ali never
opened a weapon or fired a shot, and he is going to get life
imprisonment for talking. What kind of country are we turning
the United States into today?"
The man has a different concept of justice than I do. Some talk
is unwise, and then some is also not lawful. I'd suggest he
study American system of government more to see how no right is
unlimited.
There may be progress if this mosque was willing to take action
at this latest statement. If you ask me, he's injuring the
reputation of other Muslims with such extreme views. His kind
of talk makes their lives harder, not easier.

^^^It's hard to understand this practice of female circumcision.
I understand that it is rooted more in tribal practice rather
than Islamic law. But traditions die hard in the face of
modernity . . .

This pretty much sums it up.
The practice is rooted in gender inequality, attempts to control
women's sexuality, and ideas about purity, modesty and beauty.
It is usually initiated and carried out by women, who see it as
a source of honour, and who fear that failing to have their
daughters and granddaughters cut will expose the girls to social
exclusion. Health effects depend on the procedure. They can
include recurrent infections, difficulty urinating and passing
menstrual flow, chronic pain, the development of cysts, an
inability to get pregnant, complications during childbirth, and
fatal bleeding. There are no known health benefits.
