| We Had A Dog. | |
| By: Helen Date: March 12, 2020, 12:46 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| In our 59 yrs of married life , we have 'had' 4 dogs ...but a | |
| coulpe of them 'had us'! [emoji4] This is one. | |
| Our second dog was a Basset Hound ...she had a high pedigree , | |
| her registered kennel name was "Bergeronnette Hoyden" ...and | |
| aptly named Hoyden by name and hoyden by nature "Hoyden = a | |
| boisterous female. " | |
| The first time we laid eyes on her she was aged 2 , and | |
| wild...she was charging round and round this persons living room | |
| on the back of the couches, chairs, and anything else in her | |
| way. They wanted a home for her because they didn't have time | |
| for her. The lady confessed that her husband was a policemen | |
| and she didn't have time to walk her. | |
| They had named her Heidi. ( no one used her pedigree name, too | |
| much of a mouthful) | |
| So Heidi came home with us . We had just lost our beautiful | |
| German Shepherd to age..she was 12, so our girls were thrilled | |
| with Heidi. | |
| If anyone knows anything about Bassett Hounds , if they have | |
| not been mastered by 3 months old , then they never will be. | |
| They are stubborn , and bossy. | |
| If I had not lite our fire ( shows you how long back this was) | |
| she would sit in the fireplace and glare at the cold ashes and | |
| look at me with disgust. | |
| When Dave took her for a walk , she had a mind of her | |
| own...she did not like our old dog follow his lead as to which | |
| way...if she wanted to go a different way she would just sit | |
| down and glare in the direction that she wanted to go. | |
| Once she just rolled onto her back and wouldn't move. | |
| Dave was red faced and felt very stupid as he dragged her home | |
| while laying on her back !!! ;D ( Bassets have to have a | |
| harness, never put a throat collar on a basset, it can be | |
| fatal) | |
| Because for years Dave had exercised as huge Shepherd , Heidi | |
| never ever ran around like she did the day we brought her home. | |
| Exercise was all she needed. | |
| She had a fetish for soap...yep soap, she just ate it!! | |
| [emoji23] The more scented the better!!! | |
| Also bathing...I had to close the door when either of my young | |
| girls were bathing ...or the dog would rush up the stairs and | |
| leap into the water with them. | |
| Her other weakness was raw potatoes. I had to bar her way into | |
| my pantry..once I found out that she would eat all the potatoes! | |
| [emoji33] | |
| We took her with us to visit friends once, and suddenly noticed | |
| she was not laying calmly in the room with us ...yep... | |
| [emoji38] she had gone into the lady's kitchen and was eating | |
| her potatoes. | |
| Many stories, I could write a book... | |
| Sadly we had to leave her back in England when we immigrated. | |
| But, bassets are bassets ..they are the one dog which does not | |
| 'get attached' ...she calmly walk away from with her new owners | |
| and never even looked back at us. | |
| I hope she had a good end. | |
| Say hello to Heidi. [emoji4] ♥︎ | |

| I actually wrote this article into my computer in 2011. Blondie | |
| was already gone, but never from our hearts: | |
| A few years ago, I was sitting absorbed in the book I was | |
| reading. My two youngest grandchildren were in the bedroom | |
| playing and it was my job to keep an eye on them. I had a good | |
| helper in Blondie, the golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix, who | |
| had been my faithful companion for several years. She was also | |
| the self-appointed nanny for my grandchildren. | |
| At that time we lived on a busy street corner with an all-night | |
| gas station and convenience store across the street from us. We | |
| had a large fenced backyard, but the front yard was small and | |
| unfenced. The grandchildren had been warned several times by | |
| myself and my wife that they were never allowed to play alone in | |
| the front yard. | |
| Somehow this old man missed the mark! Suddenly Blondie who was | |
| usually quiet, gentle and everyone's friend was jumping up and | |
| down and barking loudly to get my attention. She did get my | |
| attention. I checked for the grandkids and they were not in the | |
| bedroom. Blondie continued to bark frantically. I looked out the | |
| front door. The little boy and little girl [7 & 5] were running | |
| back and forth across the dangerous street laughing and carrying | |
| on. My heart nearly stopped in fright for them as it was not | |
| unusual for car to speed recklessly around the blind corner and | |
| into the gas station. I immediately ran out and got hold of | |
| them. Then with them safely back in the house, I turned to the | |
| faithful nanny, Blondie and gave her a proper reward. | |
| Blondie is gone away now, but all of us here still remember her | |
| as the faithful loving nanny that she was! | |
| Give God all of the glory, but remember that He does work | |
| through His supposedly lesser creatures! | |

| Our lovely dog was called Babs - we called her Babsie most of | |
| the time. We got her after my 15 year old son was disappointed | |
| that the owner of the lovely young German Shepherd which | |
| followed him home from the park came to collect her. | |
| He was so heartbroken that the next day we took him to the | |
| animal rescue centre to choose a dog of his own. Of course he | |
| wanted a German Shepherd but sadly for him there were none of | |
| that breed in the kennels. | |
| There was though, this beautiful collie cross lab puppy of about | |
| nine or ten weeks old and we all fell for her. | |
| Normally if a stray has been brought to the shelter they must | |
| keep it of seven days to see if it will be claimed by its owner, | |
| but as this pup had been brought in by her owner just that | |
| morning as the last of a litter they couldn't home, we were | |
| allowed to take her home with us. | |
| And we were only just in time. As we had just finished signing | |
| the papers and paying the fee another couple arrived and said | |
| they would take the puppy they had admired earlier but they | |
| couldn't have her because she was ours and she came home with | |
| us. | |
| She was beautiful, intelligent and well behaved and was a lovely | |
| addition to our family. Because of the sheepdog in her DNA she | |
| used to 'count' us when we went out with our four grandkids. | |
| And she loved to swim or paddle or just get wet. Water was a | |
| magnet for her. Unless it was the bath. We only had to say | |
| 'bath' and she would go and hide. | |
| She was also good at finding Sparky the cat late at night when | |
| he used to hide because he didn't want to go out - even though | |
| he had rather plush overnight quarters in the shed. And she had | |
| such a wide vocabulary that we had to spell words that we knew | |
| she would react to, and e ven then I think she understood | |
| p-a-r-k and w-a-l-k etc | |
| She was the best and I still miss her | |

| Amadeus and Pat. | |
| Yes, They can get right into our hearts...which is good, for in | |
| that way the will 'live-on'. | |
| The one which can still make me cry, is our third ...Solly ( | |
| Solomon) | |
| The 12 years with him was bliss. I rescued him at 5 weeks old | |
| because they were going to put down the whole litter ...because | |
| the **** (Rhodesian Ridgeback) had got out and mated with a | |
| Shepherd. | |
| They did at least advertise then 'for one week' at six week | |
| they were going to destroy them. | |
| It was the best thing I ever did. | |
| Our kids had grown and gone ..so he was our spoilt kid. LOL | |

| We are Basset hound folks as well. We bred them for a while but | |
| now down to one left. And she has been with us for nearly 11 | |
| years. Shes old and cant hear well anymore but still gets | |
| excited when she sees my truck coming up the driveway and does a | |
| little dance. She likes to stay out all night but for the last | |
| couple years we have had to put her up at night. We are infested | |
| with coyotes and she will bark all night right outside my | |
| bedroom window. Always loved bassets. Such sweet dogs. | |

| These are great stories! | |
| The first dog I remember in my family was General, the German | |
| Shepherd. General became crazy, so we kept him in the space | |
| between the garage and the fence. It was closed off and formed | |
| a pen about 10 ft by 20 ft. | |
| Access to feed General was through the little window in the side | |
| of the garage, and down the ladder-like slats nailed to the | |
| clapboard. | |
| It was my job to feed and water General. At around 6 years old, | |
| it would take me a few long seconds to get out the window, down | |
| the slats, to where his dish was, so I could pour out the | |
| canister with food. | |
| I'd creep silently into the garage. If he heard me it was over. | |
| Creep over to the window and look out, trying to not be seen, | |
| hoping, yes! Asleep in the corner! Time to move! I'd open the | |
| window, scurry down, pour, and climb back up, with this crazed | |
| animal, bigger than me, charging, snarling, snapping at my heels | |
| as I pull myself back through the window. Water was easier, | |
| just spray the hose over the fence til I filled the bowl. | |
| Unless it was knocked over. Then I'd have to set it upright. I | |
| don't really remember how long that went on til he died. | |
| Then there was Misty, the 300 lb. St. Bernard. She would lay | |
| across the laps of my sister, my brother, and I as we sat on the | |
| sofa. And until she felt like moving, there was nothing we | |
| could do. Walking Misty as a skinny 10 year old was a trip! | |
| Off she'd run, and my choice was simple. Hold on and be | |
| dragged, or let go and face my mother. I learned to hold on. | |
| This wasn't my first experience with St. Bernards. My | |
| grandparents had a St. Bernard. This would be one of my | |
| earliest memories, I'm told I was 2. Behind their house facing | |
| the orange grove, and out this dog runs, straight for me, right | |
| over the top of me, I'm not sure it even noticed me. Just kept | |
| running. | |
| But that St. Bernard was a pretty good sized bowling ball, and I | |
| was one small pin! | |
| I don't think I'll ever have a dog! | |
| Krishna the Keyshound was beautiful, smart, gentle, wonderful! | |
| But too little too late to save me! We only got to keep her | |
| like 3 months, I don't remember why. | |
| So there's my dog history. Oh, and Jamie, the toy poodle that | |
| my mother never bathed, never groomed, and always stank! I | |
| suppose that really needed to be shared! | |
| Nothing but time . . . | |
| Much love! | |
