CELESTIAL NAVIGATION IN QUR'AN |

CELESTIAL NAVIGATION |
|
Celestial Navigation is the art and science of finding your way |
|
guide by the sun, moon, stars, and planets, from one place to |
|
another on the surface of the water. We have 58 bright stars |
|
using for navigation which are Ankar, Rebel, Capella, Polaris, |
|
peacock, vegal, Altair, spica, arcturus etc. |
|
Mariners at this time also used the cross-staff and the |
|
astrolabe (c.1484 Martin Behaim) to measure the angle above the |
|
horizon of the sun and stars to determine latitude. The |
|
forerunner of the much more portable (and accurate) sextant, the |
|
astrolabe was used to measure the altitude of a sun or star. |
|
Heavy and clumsy, it was very difficult to use aboard a rolling |
|
ship, however, when new land was discovered and the astrolabe |
|
taken ashore, it was valuable in fixing the approximate latitude |
|
of the new discovery. |
|
And Allah used the following verses to describe the celestial |
|
navigation by stars |
|
Q41:12 So He ordained them seven heavens in two periods, and |
|
revealed in every heaven its affair; and We adorned the lower |
|
heaven with brilliant stars and (made it) to guard; that is the |
|
decree of the Mighty, the Knowing. |
|
Q6:97 And He it is Who has made the stars for you that you might |
|
follow the right way thereby in the darkness of the land and the |
|
sea; truly We have made plain the communications for a people |
|
who know. |
|
And He used this following verse to describe celestial |
|
navigation by stars and coaster navigation by landmark |
|
Q16:15-16 And He has cast great mountains in the earth lest it |
|
might be convulsed with you, and rivers and roads that you may |
|
go aright. And landmarks; and by the stars they find the right |
|
way. |
|
All these are created by the favour of Allah as he says in |
|
Q31:31 Do you not see that the ships run on in the sea by |
|
Allah's favor that He may show you of His signs? Most Surely |
|
there are signs in this for every patient endurer, grateful one. |
