Second Period - Challenged Middle School
By: Jack Date: June 27, 2018, 4:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Unlike my first class, I already know several students I'm going
to have here.
John Ewing
Ben Sherman
Aidan Guthrey
Paul Danvers*
Asa Chatwell*
Ralph Peterman*
William A
Elijah C
Logan F
Rusul (Russ) M
Lucas M
Kevin P
Scott P
Connor W
Right now, this is my fullest class, since they're trying to
keep me at or under 15 students in each class.
You may remember that Paul is actually 14 and has been a class
mate of Colt's. That's no longer true. He's been having more
and more trouble keeping up with his school work the past couple
of years, and he and his parents have decided that it would be
best for him to repeat 8th grade. so that he'll be able to start
high school with a stronger grip on his foundations and a better
idea of how to control or account for his diagnosis.
In a lot of ways, that's not a bad thing. Paul is not only a
late bloomer, but he's also very immature compared to most of
his peers (something fairly common in severely ADHD children).
While being held back might be embarrassing, I think it's
actually going to be a good thing for him.
On the downside, that means Ralph is still going to be my only
actual freshman. On the upside, he won't be my oldest student,
since a couple of others have had to repeat grades at some
point.
[hr]
In this class, I've already met with a few of my new students as
well.
To me, Russ (Rusul M) looks like he could be a regular Hispanic
boy, but his surname was so unusual (to me) that I looked it up,
and it's supposed to be Pakistani.
Russ will be starting his first year at BCA this fall, and he'll
be repeating 7th grade.
It seems like Russ might have been mildly ADHD in elementary,
but it didn't have a huge effect on his behavior or school work
(which is pretty much what the actual definition requires).
However, last year, he started having a lot of behavior problem
at home. His father made it clear that Russ was a fairly early
bloomer, and they thought at first that he was just developing
an early 'teen attitude', except things kept getting worse. On
the other hand, while he wouldn't do homework to save his life,
he actually was doing much better at school, except for an
occasional outburst - mostly just being shorter tempered, rather
than really acting out.
In January, he got in more serious trouble at school, which led
to some follow ups, and him finally being diagnosed with
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). It took a while, but he's
on a mild dose of Aderall for the ADHD, and that seems to have
helped the ODD, along with a lot of behavioral therapy. He's
entering BCA mostly for the smaller class size, so Russ can get
more one-on-one attention, but also because his dad's a firm
believer in CP, and he wants Russ to have consistent discipline
between home and school.
His father did give Russ and I a chance to talk alone for a few
minutes. Russ is a pretty interesting kid. He's not happy that
he's having to repeat 7th grade or that he's changing schools.
He had a bit of trouble saying some of the things he wanted to
say (as much because he lacks the vocabulary as anything - he
seemed pretty honest and open about actually talking), but he
understands that this is a disease, but he was also kind of
scared of his own behavior at times. He loves sports, but was
already having trouble because he grew young and quickly, and
then when this started up, he dropped out of football, and he
didn't even try to play baseball this past spring. He also
dropped out of Boy Scouts.
Russ was very excited to find out that my son is the middle
school athletics coach for BCA. He was also interested to learn
we did Scouts here on Mondays. He talked his dad into allowing
him to come this past Monday, and he got here early enough to
work out with the boys, then he joined the Scouts. His father
sent (Russ's mom dropped him off) a letter signed by both him
and Russ's mom, saying that he understood this wasn't a field
trip or school related in any way, but he gave permission for
myself and Marcus to treat Russ as if he was our student and we
were at school, just in case a health - or discipline - issue
arose, his mother explained.
Kevin and Scott P. are brothers, but I'll have to wait until
later to talk about them.

I said I'd talk about Kevin and Scott Pelling.
Scott and Kevin are brothers, and, without looking to confirm, I
believe they are 12 (Scott), 7th grade, and 13 (Kevin), 8th
grade. Both boys have moderate combined type ADHD (meaning they
have both hyperactivity and inattentive type).
While they boys are about 15 months apart in age, they're very
close to the same size (both right at five feet - maybe an inch
above for Kevin and under for Scott). Both boys seem like
they're probably very early adolescent, and they both have dark
brown hair and blue eyes. While they're not identical, you
could easily consider the two of them to be paternal twins (and
I've known paternal twins who looked a lot less similar than
these two).
Their mom didn't make it, but the four of us discussed their
symptoms, and some of the things I intend to do to help with the
hyperactivity in the classroom. Their father stressed that
while they did have trouble with that, he felt the inattentive
was more of a problem for their school work, and he had two
requests of me.
The first request is that they use their own version of a
homework folder, and he's asking all their teachers to double
check and initial their assignments each day, which is no
problem (I'm going to make the entire class do a homework folder
for my class, and I'll at least do random checks).
The other request was a bit more relevant to this forum.
"This is the first time they've ever been in a real class
together. The two of them are mostly best friends, but they
can... spark each other sometimes. We don't tolerate it at
home, and I'd appreciate it if you could deal firmly with it if
it happens at school."
We talked about specifics, and when I'd have to send them to the
office, but I assured him that I felt comfortable giving about
six swats with trousers down in the class room. He asked that,
if the two of them disrupted class by harassing each other, that
I do just that.
The boys were still sitting right there with us, and they were
squirming at this part of the discussion.
"Do you hear that, guys?" there Dad asked.
They both agreed they had, but he made them repeat it.
"And I can tell you - two swat on my gym shorts nearly made me
cry, and my butt was sore for like the whole next period, so I
don't even want to know how bad six on your underwear would be."
The boys were looking at him with a bit of dread on their face,
but I was looking at him in confusion.
"I didn't figure you'd remember me Mr. Wells. I was friends
with Ben when we were kids. Y'all lived around the corner from
us, but I was a couple of years younger than Ben. And then,
when Kearns opened, I was in your gym class that first year.
You had to paddle me two or three times, then you got me again
when (a female teacher) asked you to deal with me a couple of
years later.
I did check the old yearbook, and I did kind of vaguely remember
him. It was certainly an interesting revelation for me and his
kids, I think.
Anyway, Kevin and Scott seem like nice kids While he didn't go
into any detail, their dad was pretty open that they both get
spanked. While we didn't get much into detail, it sounds like
the boys are used to not keeping their underwear on for
spankings.

Ah. The circle of life. You taught the father and now the
sons.
It does seem like dad is saying when you spank his boys instead
of if you spank them?
Is in classroom spanking normal at BCA or is it an option for
your class, because it is all boys?
In elementary school we boys would often get spanked trousers
down on briefs in the classroom. That was fixed gendered
classes. But that was back when boys were not supposed to be
modest.

Classroom spanking is not 'classroom spanking, in that it's done
in the classroom. If one of my students is in trouble, I'll
discuss it with him in the hall and deal with it there.
Because my classes last year were filled with students who were
various types of discipline problem, I was allowed to make them
lower their pants. Most teachers aren't allowed to do that
without a parent. In my case, all of my students' parents were
contacted about the issue before the semester began.
In any case, all paddlings are required to be witnessed by
another teacher. The teacher doing the paddling (and preferably
the witness as well) need to be of the same gender as the
student.

That is the statement that caught my eye and inspired the
question about in classroom spankings. You had explained before
about in the hall spanking with another teacher witnessing it.
But to my knowledge this was the first time you mentioned (In my
Memory) of spanking in the classroom in front of the other
students. Which to my thinking is embarrassing to the spankee,
but a good lesson to the other boys.

In classroom as opposed to 'in office', I guess. Or maybe I
simply misspoke.
I'll be honest, while the idea of someone being paddled can be
hot (when it's someone else getting paddled), I also remember
how embarrassing it was to get paddled, even when the other kids
couldn't see and I took it quietly, so I'd never paddle another
kid (who wasn't getting in trouble himself) in front of other
kids, even if it wasn't the rules.

Great that you are getting to know your new students. That will
gave you an idea of how to work with them.
Thanks for sharing Jack

Do you think the boys left with the impression they'd be spanked
in front of the class

No. This isn't their first year at BCA, so they know the
regular procedures.

Ha, that's a good one. The circle of life. That should help
his boys adjust to the possibility of the same treatment.
