Hospital Again
By: Jack Date: May 22, 2018, 12:59 pm

First, let me say I'm writing this from home.
I had to take a trip to the emergency room this morning. I was
fine when I got up, but I started feeling light headed, and then
I was hot and clammy and slurring my speech, which immediately
made me think it was a stroke. 911 was called. I never lost
any grip strength, but I was very uncoordinated for a bit.
At the hospital, they ran blood test, did a chest x-ray, an EKG,
and then an MRI. God in heaven, I hated the MRI.
Apparently I am just fine. It seems the problem is that I was
somewhat dehydrated (my blood sugar was up a bit, but I'd
already had breakfast, so that doesn't mean anything). I was
already back to normal by this time, but they gave me an IV of
fluid anyway, and they have cut my diuretic (a pill to make you
not hold water) back by 25% daily. More importantly, if this
arises again, I'll know the symptoms, so I should be able to sit
down and have a drink if I detect them starting again.
Anyway, everything is fine, except I missed some class time
right before finals, but the boys had a period to work, which
Mr. P covered, so they should be okay anyway. I just wanted to
let everyone know the situation.

Sorry you wound up back at the ER and hope you don't experience
any recurrences. I seem to recall that the symptoms you
describe can be associated with dehydration, and in that case it
makes sense that they cut back the dose of your diuretic. If
you feel something similar starting again then it makes sense
to try rehydrating.

Glad you are okay. Been there, and still do get light headed,
when I don't keep my water intake up. Low blood sugar will make
me light headed. If I put off eating and then try to do some
work.
Dehydration is serious stuff, so make sure to drink plenty of
water. I had to increase my water consumption, because of
kidney infections from dehydrating. I am at just over a half
gallon (70-75 ounces or 2 liters) of water a day and need to
increase it even more. 3 liters or 102 ounces per day for a man
is recommended but honestly that is a lot of water.

Glad you feel better Jack.
Hopefully recalibration of your meds has fixed the problem.
Not sure if this is what the docs recommend but I go through a
ton of Tang, love the stuff.

I am joining all who are glad you are well once gain, and most
importantly, that they determined the cause for this today
fairly readily. Having personally experienced a situation where
the cause for a medical issue was not able to be definitively
determined in the Emergency Department, and that resulted in a
long cycle of specialist visits and tests. It was a lengthy,
expensive but even worse, worrisome process to rule out each
possible issue that I would not wish on my worst enemy. It is
truly a blessing that this did not happen to you, Jack, and I am
very glad to hear that you are now fine and can address a
similar attack in the future, should it occur.

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather...
God in heaven, I hated the MRI.
Stevie doesn't think, however, that MRIs are all that bad
compared with some of the procedures he's had over the years...
just be grateful they didn't decide to do an angiogram and
all...
Stevie really, really hates having angiograms...

Glad you're feeling better. The lightheadedness that goes with
low blood pressure from dehydration truly feels awful.

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes.
They are treating this as a TIA (mini-stroke) for safety
reasons, and I still need to do a follow up, but I am feeling
fine, and I have an idea what to watch out for now, so hopefully
it won't become a problem again.
