Jonah and the Whaling - MMSA story by DMK and Skip Trace

So, this past Wednesday, a thought of a story came to me. Hence
the reason this story is set on a Wednesday.
A boy has an argument with his dad and something happens and he
feels bad about it and he seeks out a spanking for it.
Yes, that is simple, but, if I tell much of anything then there
would be spoilers.
I decided to myself, "Hey, Self, this would make a nice quick
short story." Those of you who have been around me a while know
to run when I decide I am going to write a "short" story. Z, the
last one was what, 32,000 words?
I got in to the thing and it was flowing well - too well. I had
almost 3000 words written and had not even got to a major plot
point much less a transition point to a spanking. Self said,
"OK, well, it will just be a tad longer than a short. You can
clean some of the extraneous stuff up in editing." I was
enjoying the process and chugging along. I had everything where
I wanted it, or so I thought, and was ready to transition to the
spanking. Hello, brick wall.
I reached out to my friend and fellow author and the guy who
proofs and edits for me (everyone needs someone to proof and
edit for them), Skip Trace. "Hey, I got this story. I am ready
to spank the kid, but I can't get around the corner, you got any
ideas?" He agreed to look at it and came back with some
beautiful text that went places I didn't even think about going.
"Thanks, Skip! Let me credit you as a collaborating author." He
says, "Not necessary." I am not feeling too good about this so I
get him to agree to come on board as a collaborator. I say,
"Since your name is going to be on it, why don't you go through
it and work your magic."
Skip thought of ideas I could have never thought of and polished
up some rough edges for me. The finished product had definitely
become OUR story and looked nothing like a short story - mainly
because it is almost 10,000 words long.
I love this story. I love how Jonah fights with his conscience.
I love a story about a good boy who needs to be reigned in just
a little. I love loving families and I love stories about
brothers.
For those who are curious "whaling" does have an archaic slang
meaning: "Whaling" in slang means to beat someone forcefully or
repeatedly, essentially meaning to hit someone hard and
continuously; it's often used in phrases like "whale on someone"
or "whale the tar out of someone." It has been used colloquially
in places, esp., the American South as a euphemism for spanking.
My protagonist's name was Jonah so what better title?
Please give this one a look. Thanks!
Many thanks to Skip for his support and input!
