I patted my pockets to make sure I had everything.
I�d enjoyed a couple of days off - at least one, and then the
early release on Tuesday.
Now Simon had called to see if I could come in early. When I
agreed, he volunteered to pick me up.
After he greeted me, we pulled out of the driveway.
�Spence, I need to ask you something.�
That rarely boded well, but I managed to answer, �okay�.
�Are you gay?�
And� that was not what I expected.
�You know you don�t have to answer, but I won�t tell anybody.�
I really didn�t want to answer. I don�t mind some people
knowing, but it seemed like it made things so complicated.
�The thing is� well, for now, let�s just say I�m asking for a
reason, not just my prurient curiosity.�
�Yeah,� i said, half mumbling, but apparently he understood.
�Do you and Troy have anything going?�
�No,� I replied.
�Okay. The thing is Troy really likes you. Saturday, when I
took him home, he seemed really excited and upbeat, and I
thought something might have happened between you two.�
I had to think about it for a second, but then I told him a bit
of what had happened.
�But then Monday, he was really mad at you and didn�t want to
talk about you or anything else.�
I just shrugged. I didn�t have a clue what to say or what could
be wrong with him, and I told Simon that.
�Well, if you honestly don�t know the problem, I can�t blame you
for it. He really is a good kid, though, and if you have a
chance to talk to him - maybe you can try to find out.�
�Okay,� I agreed as we pulled into the church parking lot.
I got out and went to work. We weren�t going to be as crowded
today. Mostly we were going to be moving things over to the
stage. I�d had to touch up a couple of things but now I was
sure everything was ready to go.
�Hey, Spencer.�
I turned to find Tate behind me.
�Hey, Bud. Have you see Troy?�
�Nope,� Tate replied. �I did find this cart, though.�
Several other boys were coming over, and I got them started
moving things, while using the cart for the bigger or more
awkward loads. I kept seeing Troy, but it was like if I went
one way, he went the other.
When I finally managed to catch up with him, he just kept going.
�I�m busy,� he tossed over his shoulder.
�Simon asked me to talk to you, Troy.�
He signed and stopped, and I motioned him to the side, where
we�d be out of the way and out of earshot.
�What?� he snapped at me.
�Is something wrong?� I asked, really not understanding why he
seemed so upset.
�Oh, no,� he answered facetiously. �What in the world could be
wrong.�
�Fine. You don�t wanna talk, then don�t��
�You spanked, Tate,� he interrupted me.
�And you�re mad about that?� I asked, still confused.
�Yes! After you and I� you know what, it doesn�t matter.�
�After you and I�.? You mean after you and I played around
Saturday?�
Troy turned dark red, but he nodded.
�I thought we were� friends.�
The way he said �friends� suggested he meant a whole lot more
than just friends.
�Troy, I spanked Tate AFTER he spanked me.�
Troy�s eyebrows shot up.
�I let him spank me, because he said he�d tell if I didn�t let
him. I think he was joking, at least I thought so afterwards.
When he got through spanking me, he bared his butt and told me
to take my turn.�
Troy looked like he didn�t want to believe me, but he nodded his
head.
�And that�s the only reason?� he asked.
�He�s a nice kid, and I like him. He�s cute and spankable. I
wouldn�t have let him spank me if he hadn�t threatened me,
but�.�
I shrugged.
Troy looked at me for a long minute.
�I gotta go,� he finally said and took off before I could think
of anything to say.
I wanted to go after him, but I couldn�t think of anything else
to day. Instead, I went back to work, making sure we got all
the props to the stage safely. Then I left Simon and Troy
setting things up.
�Can we talk?�
Daniel turned to look at me, then he looked away and shrugged.
�I�m sorry for not listening to you earlier, Daniel, but I was
really mad, and I didn�t want to say anything to hurt your
feelings.�
�You still hurt �em.�
�I�m sorry, but I just didn�t know what to do. Besides, aren�t
I the one who should be mad here?�
He shrugged again.
�If you have something you wanted to tell me, now�s the time.�
�First of all, I swear I didn�t tell anyone about it. I think I
figured out what happened, though.�
�Okay - what do you think happened.�
�My dad called and talked to Mr. Todd, and I think Mr. Todd
talked to Simon and your dad, didn�t he?�
�I think so.�
�Well, Mr. Todd�s son one of the magi. He�s working with Simon.
He could have heard some of it, ten told anybody, and after one
person knew��
Another shrug.
I held up a finger and went to talk to Simon. Simon had no
idea, but Troy overheard part of it, and he had seen Jeffrey
telling another kid about it. Troy had told them off and that
gossiping was wrong. That doesn�t prove Jeffrey Todd had been
the source, but it was sure suggestive.
Daniel had watched me talk with the others. I went back to him,
told him what I�d learned, and apologized.
For that accusation.
�And I�m really sorry you got in trouble because of me, Spence.
When I got home that first night, I told Dad I had tripped
backwards and bumped the corner of a desk, so I was pretty hard.
That worked okay.
�The thing is, when I got out of the shower Saturday morning,
Dad was putting some laundry in my room. I was bare, and he saw
the mark, and he knew I�d lied about it. He demanded to know
what happened and why I�d lied, and I couldn�t think of anything
else to say. He spanked me for lying that first time, but since
I had the bruise on my butt, he only smacked my legs, and that
hurt like crazy. I was just scared to tell him anything but the
truth.�
Daniel was nearly in tears, and I believed he was still telling
the truth. I pulled him to me. He was stiff for a moment, but
then he relaxed into me, before wrapping his own arms around me.
�I�m really sorry,� Daniel said.
�I am, too. And I�m sorry for not listening to you before.�
�I don�t blame you,� he said. �I don�t think I would have
believed me either - especially not right after a spanking like
your dad gave you.�
We held each other tight for a moment, then finally broke apart.
�Let�s get this stuff finished, okay?�
�Okay,� Daniel answered me. �Are we still friends?�
�Yeah, I think we are.�

I am happy Spence can forgive Daniel. Daniel didn't have any
choice but to tell. He was caught out and had to tell. I even
understand Daniel's dad being ticked off.
But now I am lost with who is mad at who and why they are mad.
Tate, Troy, Simon, Jeffery Todd, what a tangled web.
Simon actually just came right out and outed Spence? "Are you
gay?" Just like that. WOW!
Like I said. Spencer should have stayed in his room after the
beating. Things are just going from bad to worse.
Can you tell I am anti-social? I don't like complications. I
feel really sorry for Spence. He should have listened to me,
but you know teens, they have to learn the hard way. ::)

I'm proud of Spencer for giving Daniel the opportunity to
explain his side and for putting his anger in the past and
getting over it.
I don't think Troy is angry any more, but I do think Tate needs
some serious attention for his attempt at blackmail. That wasn't
at all fair to Spencer.
I'm also hoping to see how Spencer's relationship with his dad
goes. The suspense is getting to me!

I'm pretty sure that's not 'outing'.
I thought it was pretty clear in the story, but Simon had
assumed that Troy and Spencer were gay, and that the two of them
had hooked up. Then, just a couple of days later, Troy had gone
from euphoria to anger and depression - both centered around
Spencer - and Simon just wanted to know what had happened, so he
could try to help.

I'm also lost, especially wrt what Troy's problem is, but I'm
glad Daniel's story finally came out.

It's been too long since I wrote this, and I've not reread the
entire thing, but I think....
Spence is mad at his dad, for the very hard spanking and for
doing it in front of others.
Spence was mad at Daniel, but they figured out what happened,
and they're at least trying to move past it.
Troy was mad at Spencer, because he felt like Spencer had
cheated on him (even though they're not going steady or
anything).
Spencer is NOT mad at Tate. Yes, there was some blackmail, but
it turned out to be more in the way of a bad joke, and they both
had a good time.
Simon isn't mad at anyone, but he is close with Troy and Spence
both, and he hopes they can patch the situation between them.
Everyone who knows is mad at Jeffrey Todd, because Jeff seems to
be the leak that let everyone know Spence had been spanked.
