It Happened One Christmas Chapter Fourteen

What do you think he was thinking?
Charlies voice jerked me back from my bedroom. Id been
watching Dad so closely, Im not sure if it had started to fade
or not.
I was quiet a long moment before answering.
I dont know.
Do you think he was mad?
How should I know?
Hes your father, Bailey. Dont you recognize when hes mad?
I sighed. No, I dont think he was mad.
But you dont know what he was feeling?
No.
You cant even guess?
How should I know? Why should I guess? I snapped at the
younger boy.
Im cold.
Im not keeping you here, I responded coldly.
I thought maybe we could walk a bit.
I looked at him for a moment, looked around, then looked at
where the snow had started drifting around my boots. After a
moments hesitation, I waved for him to lead on.
We left the bridge back towards town, but turned the opposite
way from my home. It looked like a residential neighborhood -
nice, but not real expensive. I couldnt help noticing that
lights were up on almost every house.
After a few blocks, I sensed more than saw Charlie smile, and he
held his hand up. I stopped, and looked where he pointed, at a
young boy - 12ish, about the same size as Charlie - bundled up
and pushing a recycling bin towards the curb.
David, a voice called out, drawing my attention to a woman
standing at the side door.
The boy stopped and looked back.
Yeah, Mom?
I forgot to check the mail today, honey.
The kid - David? - nodded his head and called back that hed
check it.
Seems like a happy family, doesnt it?
I shrugged. What could you tell from a couple of sentences in
public.
Do you recognize him?
The kid was bundled up so I could barely see him. I have to
admit the name seemed familiar, but I couldnt place it.
I shook my head.
As David stuck his hand in the mailbox and came out empty,
Charlie raised his hand, flat, like he was signaling a stop, and
then he closed it. The snow which had been falling gusted
towards us, then stopped. Charlie opened his fist so two
fingers were sticking up, and he moved his fist in a circling
motion.
I gaped as the snow flew back from us. I guess I shouldnt have
been surprised, but this was different than what Id seen. My
attention was quickly drawn back to the house as David backed
his way across the lawn, pulling the recycling in with him.
As we watched, it was easy to see what was going on, but time
also seemed to pass quickly. We watched David help his dad put
up the Christmas decorations, help his Mom make cookies, study,
clean his room, and shovel the sidewalk. They ate together,
watched TV together, cheered football and his report card
together. They did seem a happy family.
Time went by more quickly. David got spanked by his dad. As
fast as it went by, I heard him crying, and I could tell that it
had ended with a hug. It wasnt the only one David got, but
there didnt seem to be many, and they seemed to be offset by
the good times - the games, the trips, the meals, and just the
quiet time they spent together reading.
David unraked leaves that flew back onto the trees, and the
leaves changed from multi-colored glory to green. Summer
returned as David uncut the yard, and the heat of summer faded
to the storms of spring. Grey slush grew from the grass, grew
and turned white, then flew back into the sky. Suddenly Charlie
stopped his hand, then circled it once the other way.
Ill ask again, do you think theyre a happy family?
I guess they are. I dont know why I should care.
Lets see if theres maybe a reason you should.

Charlie's spanking streaming service is wasted on a non-spanko
kid like Bailey ;D
I'm getting curious at how the story is going to end. I would
expect a reconciliation between Bailey and his dad with no more
spanking, although maybe Charlie will have him so convinced by
then that Bailey himself will agree to a spanking for running
away.

I am surprised that Bailey didn't give more time to considering
the look on his dad's face after the last spanking scene. I
think Bailey is too focussed on feeling sorry for himself. I
think Charlie is trying to help him see that getting a spanking
isn't the end of the world.

Charlie seems to be preaching to the choir.
