This is the end of school, in 1876, in Austin, Texas. I started
high school in the fall of '79, in an area outside of Dallas -
north and east of Austin.
I can say that this kind of thing generally didn't happen when
and where I was. On the other hand, there were rumors about it,
so I don't know if I just missed it, or if it was mostly rumors,
or if it was reserved for athletes.

1976. I graduated from HS in 1971. There were rumors of such
things, even in liberal Los Angeles, but I never saw it,
experienced it, or heard about it from someone who actually had.
Makes for a fun movie, though.

Where you most often hear about such rituals is in college
fraternity hazing, and many of those would be true in years
past. Universities have forcefully prohibited such rituals
after some serious injuries or deaths and now they are uncommon.
My dad showed me a barely visible scar on his arm where his
senior fraternity brothers branded the Greek letters on him with
a small branding iron. That's pretty heavy-duty hazing. He
also said some pledges were taken out in the country and left
naked to find their way back. Paddling was also very common.
When I was in college the hazing rituals I heard about were
milder, like washing senior fraternity brothers' cars, carrying
their books, doing their homework, etc. One I remember was
having little bells and a string tied around the pledges' ****
all the time with the end of the string hanging out above the
belt so anyone could grab it and pull it. (I saw some of those
but resisted the urge to grab and pull since I didn't know them
that well.)

I never pledged to any Frats when I went to University. I have
never been a joiner of anything. I never played sports or was I
ever a member of any teams. So I never saw any hazing. I heard
about different things that were done, but never witnessed
anything.
