[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,

sans-serif]We recieved our briefing, our guys are assulting the
town of Saint Lo today. This is to be a major action. Our
mission is to stop enemy armour from participating in the
battle. Our planes are loaded for bear with 1000 lbs bombs and
rockets. We headed to our aircraft and took-off without
incident. As we flew our flight plan we saw numerous ground
skirmishes along the way.

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,
sans-serif][font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,
sans-serif][font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,

heavy enemy flak. I was hit. My plane began to leak fuel and the
rudder was sluggish. However, she could still fly. I pushed onto
the target area. Once we arrived over Saint Lo, I cut the group
loose, ordering them to attack ground targets. I then began to
search for enemy tanks. I found a group of enemy tanks in the
open attempting to cross a bridge into the town. I made several
attacks on this column with my rockets. I was able to destroy
all four tanks I saw. I then pulled up and headed for a
bridge-head separating the town. I dropped my bombs on the enemy
vehicles and flak guns. Unfortunately, there were friendly
vehicles crossing at the time and I destroyed one friendly tank.

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,

sans-serif][font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,

attention to the enemy vehicles located within the town itself.
I made several attacks, sighting numerous enemy vehicles. I
found an open area and repeated my attacks in that area hitting
targets at will with my cannons and guns. Enemy flak found me
once again and this time I had another fuel leak, a big one. It
was time to go home.

right tail/rudder, it had been peppered with flak pretty well. I
reported the destroyed friendly tank incident to the CO. He said
he would send it up the chain of command so the unit could be
informed. He told me to try and shake it off as that area was
fully embroiled with troops from both sides, the consequences of
war.

DHumphrey, the old saying is that "War is Hell!" . While you may
have nightmares about the occupants of our friendly tank, it was
ultimately the fault of the enemy tank presence in the first
place. I would recommend a session with the base chaplain, Mate.
Excellent job, Sir, as always!

Once again you have completed a great flight, and you have left
a good collection of fires down there. I hope that the other
pilots who fly there (myself included) have the same luck as
you. I will be satisfied if I can return home after visiting
that hell. Congratulations, friend!

Actual Mission Name: Y2021 - Week 16 / LIBERATION OF SAINT LO
Date single mission actually flown: APRIL 22, 2021
Mission Score: -585 points. >:(
Misc. Info if desired: Mission flown in BAT BLUE EDGE 1.2.3
Results/description of mission: Mission Complete
This has been my blackest flight. The assigned task was one of
tremendous responsibility. We had to neutralize enemy movements
within Saint Lo. The smoke from the heavy fires and the Germans
shooting at us from below made matters considerably more
complicated. The first thing we did was drop the bombs on some
Panzers that were advancing down a street towards the river. One
of them caught fire at the time.

We kept attacking everything that moved, it was very difficult
to distinguish anything. We unleash our rockets on trucks,
motorcycles, tanks. Sometimes we hit the mark, other times we
didn't. Some Kubel burned only with our cannons. Then that
horrible episode happened ...
The fight had been moving towards the east, towards the bridge
that crosses the river, and that unites both parts of the city.
Our boys were advancing strongly on that bridge, and had already
crossed it, nullifying all the opposition they encountered along
the way. But the panzers were hiding in the streets of the
factory area, and our tanks were beginning to surround them.
Soon the Germans were surrounded by the south, the east and the
north. My job there was to push from the west so they wouldn't
back down. But the fires there made it difficult to clearly
identify the targets. I took a wide turn, keeping the area in
sight as I prepared for a devastating attack. I still had
rockets left, and I had a good chance of landing a good hit. I
saw a group of tanks moving through the smoke, flames and
twisted metal debris ... I took aim quickly ... and released all
the rockets that I had ... BOOOOMMM !!!!

Two armored vehicles and a light vehicle were destroyed on the
spot. They were Americans.
I no longer wanted to continue participating in that madness,
born in the feverish mind of some hierarch of war or death ... I
returned home, ready to face whatever came.
I left my plane in its place. I jumped out of my cabin and went
without hesitation to the canteen, to fill myself with whiskey,
and to wait for the Military Police to come to arrest me.
End of my report.

Haukka!
I see that we have had similar experiences. This was the most
warring units I have ever seen in one city, and the fighting so
close, the smoke so thick, that telling friend from foe was a
difficult task indeed! I destroyed several of my own tanks in
one pass, and simply flew home for a negative score of -850.
Well, my pilot would have certainly been in trouble, and maybe
even facing a firing squad. He really didn't want to hand the
report to his C.O., but everyone in the flight saw it. (BTW, I
must commend you on creating such a beautiful montage of
screenshots for us! Thank you, Sir! All very pretty, and many
appearing photographic in detail!) I have since repeated the
mission 3 times, shot down twice by ground fire, and then
yesterday finally finishing the mission with a score of 205. So
if you are feeling "blue" about your score, just remember: Bird
still did WAY worse than you LOL.
Well . . . Sigh!
That's my mission report.

Bird and Haukka,
The Saint Lo mission was perhaps the most difficult mission
we've attempted. Haukka did an awesome job of recreating a
mission that truly was a representation of the "Fog of War". The
battle below in the town showed how difficult it is to try and
distinguish friend from foe flying at 150+ knots, 100 feet off
the ground. You both did a fine job getting your aircraft home
and making your reports.
There was an actual mission where allied bombing caused a
"major" friendly fire incident. During "Operation Cobra", the
break-out of the hedge row country, not far from Saint Lo. The
Allies bombed a large area trying to destroy the enemy hidden in
the hedge row area, but the Allied ground troops were also
scattered through-out the area. A message was sent to those
units to retreat from the area before the bombing but many of
the units never recieved the message. More than 25 Americans
were killed and another 130 were wounded.

Thanks Bird for your good words of support, I appreciate the
gesture. It is possible that we both end up in the same military
prison, eating the same black bean broths where it is difficult
to identify a weevil or a beetle from a legume ... We will make
chess pieces with remains of old bread, in order to make the
afternoons more enjoyable in the prison yard.
Thanks DHumphrey for your good concepts and your historical
contribution, I had no idea of the incident you describe. Sadly,
those things seem to have happened more often than we think.
This mission has been complete hell. As the editor of the
mission I am satisfied, because that is the environment that I
was trying to recreate, and I think that to some extent I have
succeeded. As a pilot, well, there is the report of the disaster
that I caused. But these things are like that. This is a game
and I can't pretend that everything is always easy and edible.
Anyway I have enjoyed it.
Thanks again. I'm going to work tomorrow's mission now. See you
later, friends. Have a nice day!
