Mission Results Week 14
By: tsisqua Date: April 5, 2021, 2:47 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I was really startled when the orders to scramble came bursting
into my room. Poor Coms Sgt.; He has to always be the one.
Normal takeoff. Rendezvous and head for the enemy formation.
Advance fighters spotted! Remember, men: the bombers are our
primary target. But don't take any crap!
I start in on a flight just above the altitude of my Lightning.
Then spot another group below, and much closer. I select gun
pods, and begin to let the number 4 have it! He's smoking and
I'm CLOSE! I push the nose down, but it's too late! He's torn
off my vertical stabilizers. After a week of rudder training, I
now have no rudder.
I move in on another group. Angry! I fire until something smoke,
or goes down. my Ailerons are gone, all I have is elevator. And
I'm in a turn. I wait till over friendly troops to bail.
I claim 3 planes: two of theirs, and one of ours. (Mine!)

Those rear gunners have a very bad temper, they are always
firing if you get close. What came later: losing the rudders due
to collision and losing the ailerons by putting yourself within
range of the gunners, are consequences of taking a totally
inadvisable situation to the extreme, that is: attacking a Ju-88
from six direct.
You can learn from all situations, and surely you will review
your attack techniques from this result, as this can be tried in
another way.
You have already flown this mission and this result remains as
the official one, but fly the mission again, look for other ways
to deal with the problem. Remember the altitude to which you
must ascend. Go to the direct encounter of the bombers, attack
them from the front (a little lower, or a little higher, or with
some side angle), from above (pointing at the pilot's head),
from two or eleven (especially from above, with energy), but
restrain yourself before attacking from six. Or if you attack
from behind, you must be moving, and do it in a fast pass, but
never stay static behind, as if you were being towed, because
you become the target, without a doubt, and that is bad
business.
All right. You claim three planes. So naughty! We will only pay
you two. But first you pay us the P-38, which has cost taxpayers
a fortune.
Thank you for participating, friend, and for the video you have
made that has helped us understand the situation.
Keep practicing.

Actual Mission Name: Y2021 - Week 14 / INTERCEPT &DESTROY
Date single mission actually flown: APRIL 6, 2021
Mission Score: 200 points.
Misc. Info if desired: Mission flown in BAT BLUE EDGE 4.1.2
Results/description of mission: Mission Complete
Debrief:
This is the most devilish mission of all so far this year. Those
German escorts barely let me get close to the Junkers. My first
attack pass had no effect, it was improvised and messy. After
that, a couple of Bf-109s started chasing me furiously. I had to
maneuver quite a bit to evade their shots, but that took me away
from my target and caused me to lose altitude. They didn't leave
me alone until They had punctured my fuel tank and messed up my
aileron control. My boys put up a good fight though, shooting
down several bombers. I don't know what happened to my escort,
they should have been there when I needed them. I'll review the
recording track later. When I lost my ailerons, I decided it was
time to try to get back to base, before continuing to receive
German ammunition. The landing was dangerous, and I passed near
the wooden tower of the runway, but everything ended well. I was
able to drive the plane to his "lair". The guy on the bike is
still working there, I suspect it's an excuse not to pick up a
gun.

After Action Review
(AAR):
The CO briefed our
section that enemy bombers were heading into our sector. The
crew chiefs already had our planes warmed up and ready on the
flight line. We got in our planes and took-off without issue.
Ground controllers were guiding us to the enemy formation. We
were joined by a flight of P-51s on the way to the target area.
We spotted the bombers within 10 minutes.

As we approached the
enemy bomber, a group of enemy fighters, Bf-109s, appeared. The
P-51s engaged immediately. I ordered our section to "attack
bombers". We approached the bombers from below as they had a
height advantage. I sighted in on my first target, an He-111,
trying to avoid fire from the tail gunner. I closed the range
rapidly and fired. My wing cannons and aircraft guns found the
mark. As I fired, I could here the enemy rounds impacting on my
aircraft. My gun fire caused the enemy aircraft to catch fire it
then rolled over in an uncontrollable spin crashing into the
ground below.

I then searched for
another target. I found another group of Ju-88 bombers. I saw
one of the bombers pulling up and to the right as I closed on
the formation. This pilot had made a bad mistake. He gave me a
perfect sight picture of his aircraft. I open fired and his
right wing separated from the aircraft. Shortly after the bomber
exploded in mid-air.

https://i.ibb.co/cbwMVQp/Apr-7-2021-2-32-58-AM.jpg
I continued my
attacks and well as ordering our section to press their attacks.
We were destroying the bombers almost at will. Suddenly during
an attack on another Ju-88 I heard a loud bang on my left. I
broke off the attack and looked at my left engine. Smoke was
billowing from the left nacelle. I checked my engine
gauges, the engine was still operating well enough to continue
my attack. The Ju-88 was also smoking from my gunfire when I
returned. I dove on the stricken bomber from above hitting the
aircraft hard with another burst of cannon-fire. The bomber crew
then began to bail-out of the doomed aircraft.
https://i.ibb.co/Gd6rd1z/Apr-7-2021-2-35-27-AM.jpg
I looked around the sky and found no other targets and my left
engine then began to overheat, it was time to gather the flock
and head home. One of our group did not make it back, he was
able to bail-out over friendly lines and made it back to our
base on the following day, none the worse for wear. I landed
safely and taxied up to the maintenance tent. My crew chief had
the plane's crew pulling the engine before I got out of the
plane. He told me that it would be another "case of beer" night,
but it should be ready for another mission by morning.
