Mission Results Week 13
By: DHumphrey Date: March 29, 2021, 1:41 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Once again I have no screen shots for this mission as my
Photoshop program is still not working.
Mission: Week #13
Mission type: Ground attack
Date Flown: 3/29/21
Version used: Vp Modact
Mission results: Survived (barely), 1x enemy aircraft destroyed,
42x ground kills, 1730 pts
After Action Review (AAR):
We recieved our orders for the mission from the CO. We rearmed
our aircraft once we were told we could of after ToO's, targets
of opportunity. We were now armed with bombs and rockets. The
target was to be an enemy ammunition depot located southeast
from our home base near the front lines in the town of St. Lo.
My section took-off without incident. We climbed to 2500 ft,
formed up and headed for the target. As we neared the front line
area we could see a major battle taking place. I was hoping once
we finished hitting the prime target we could visit those huns
below giving our boys a hard time. :)
We reached the target area and almost immediately our top cover,
P-51's, split from our group and targeted enemy Fw-190's that
were in the area. That left us free to hit the target. I ordered
the section to attack ground targets. I turned for the ammo
depot, opened up throttles and bored down onto the target. I
encountered heavy flak at the target. I released my bombs and
pulled away. I looked back in time to see a large explosion. At
least 3x buildings were vaporized along with a nearby fuel tank.
Numerous vehicles were destroyed. The rest of the section made
their attacks and after just a couple of minutes the ammo depot
was totally destroyed.
I called the section and had them reform on me. Just As I was
heading for the front I heard a loud bang and felt my aircraft
shake. I looked to my left and saw that my left alerion was
missing. I still had good control of the aircraft and proceeded
to the front. As we arrived I saw an enemy aircraft in the area,
a Fw-189 observation aircraft. I was able to easily roll onto
its 6 O'clock position. What I had forgot was this aircraft has
a tail gunner, he saw me and fired. He missed. I opened up with
my guns, the right wing fell from the enemy aircraft. The plane
then rolled over and began an uncontrollable spin for the
ground. The tail gunner was able to bail out, I saw no other
chutes. The Fw exploded when it impacted the ground.
I then turned back for the front area and spotted a large enemy
vehicle column on the road below. It was also protected by heavy
flak. I ordered the section to attack. I bored in from the rear
of the column, here I used my rockets. I let loose with them
hitting trucks, AAA guns, and tanks. As I pulled up and away
from the column I saw the entire road ridded with destroyed
enemy vehicles.
I went back for another round. I lined up once again and let
loose with my cannons and machine guns. I raked the column hard
once again destroying numerous enemy vehicles. This time however
one of the enemy flak guns had a bead on me and hit me hard in
the center wing section of my plane. I still had control but I
also had a major fuel leak as well. I recalled the section and
we headed for home.
I was very grateful that we were not far from home and we
reached our base within 10-15 minutes. I was able to land safely
and taxied to the marked maintenance cammo net and shut down. My
crew chief came over and looked at what was left of my bird and
said, "Sir, this is going to be a 2x cases of beer job to her
back in the air." I looked at the Sergeant and said, "let me get
the beer and I'll be back to give you guys a hand." :)
Mission notes: Haukka, this was an excellent mission. It was
planned out very well with quite a bit of detail. The flak was a
very good source of anxiousness and nervousness, it
kept me on my toes during the entire
mission. :)

Great mission!!! My question is: have you left something whole
for others? At this rate, the Germans will put a price on your
head, but also on your hands, your cannons, your boots, your hat
and your cigars... ::) at least it seems that they already
received a aileron in exchange for everything that mess.
I hope our brave Tsisqua and Beowolff teach those Huns a good
lesson. Our boys are being very careful not to say when they
will attack. I wish you the best of luck in this adventure.
Don't forget the sunscreen.
***********
I take this opportunity to summon those brave people who want to
fly but who think there are not enough bullets for everyone. You
are wrong boy, what is left over are bullets, bombs and rockets.
Come fly with us, we need reinforcements to win this war.
Have a good week everyone.

I was enetering this debriefing/mission report directly into the
teletype when our system crashed, so beginning again. Hardcopy!
Then have the comm boys send it later. (Damn AT&T)
After recieving my new aircraft commission I made the mistake of
assuming that my crew chief would automatically set my bomb
fuses, having been training in the "J" model. I was mistaken,
and from now on he will certainly know!
When my flight arrived at the target area much was already on
fire. I selected a target, but needed a better approach, so I
zoomed back out to set up my run. True to my brefing the ground
fire now became hot. I managed to drop my payload without
damage, but upon looking back I say no detonation. CONSARN IT!
Leaving the area we were jumped by a number of enemy fighters,
Focke Wulfe I believe. We began expending ammo in the air, and
future ground attacks were becoming "Out Of The Question". I
managed to take out one of the fighters by myself, then later a
"Smoker" which had been wounded by one of the P-51's and was
trying to escape at low altitude.
I led the flight to the next waypoint to regroup, and was
pleased to see that all of my boys were still flying! Unable to
assist in the ground war beneath us, we watched for a while and
saw enemy positions being devastated by our troops, a pleasure
to behold.
Led the flight back home, and landed without further incident. I
claim 1 aerial kill and one shared. Taxied and parked at the
designated spot.
Extensive gun cam footage to follow as soon as I make it clear
to my chief that I want this bird refitted.

I'm very sorry to hear that, son ... but I promise you this
won't stay that way, not at all! :'( We'll open an
investigation to find out what the hell is happening to the
fuses on our gifts, because your guys didn't break anything
either ... ::)
From tomorrow everything will be checked twice, and we will take
note of each bullet, each rocket, each bomb. The guard at the
ammunition depot is also being reinforced ... we do not discount
a sabotage ...
A question to all the staff: has any of you smuggled a woman
into the base?
That is all for today. We'll see you at breakfast time.
*************************
PS: Good mission, Bird. If you had fun, the mission is complete.
;)
*************************
Guys, a question to those who have already flown: have you left
the plane under the camouflage net? Or have you just left it on
the white cross?
You know what the Boss wants, that you leave it "under the net."
That could give you some extra score, I mean, with your crew
chief, who knows? It will be good to keep this point in mind for
future missions. 8)

Here's the video. And I, once again, ASSUMED! LOL I assumed that
all I would get for stopping on the "X" under the net was the
"Mission Complete" award, so when I saw the message appear I
just parked it nearby. I promise to pay closer attention to
details in the future ;) .

Good morning friend, in fact, you complete the mission upon
landing. What you get by parking under the net are a few extra
points, but that also carries risks, it is a narrow place that
requires maneuvering with great caution. But I repeat, it is not
necessary to do that to complete the mission.
Thanks for the video, I'll watch it now, ;)
Have a nice day!

Great mission bird, well done, you came home in one piece, that
flak was brutal. :)
Haukka, I parked inside the maintenance netting, my plane was a
wreck after this mission and the mech's had me pull the plane
under the net. :)

Actual Mission Name: Y2021 - Week 13 / STRIKE IN MARIGNY
Date single mission actually flown: APRIL 2, 2021
Mission Score: 795 points.
Misc. Info if desired: Mission flown in BAT BLUE EDGE 4.1.2
Results/description of mission: Mission Complete
Debrief:
We were told to attack some ammunition and weapons depots on the
outskirts of a small town, Marigny. After quickly surveying our
route on the map, we took off loaded with two 500-pound bombs.
We headed for the city of Carentan, and from there we continued
flying south to Marigny. We kept flying below the cloud cover,
no higher than 2000 feet. Shortly thereafter we spotted Marigny,
six or seven miles from St Lo, where terrible house-to-house
fighting is taking place. From the air we see the fires in the
distance. We focus on our task, just thinking of leaving that
nice pair of gifts at the German facility.
We enter with a gentle dive, and shortly before dropping our
bombs, one of the warehouses flies through the air in front of
me: it was my boys who took a direct course when I ordered them
to attack the ground, while I made a small detour: their bombs
arrived a second before mine.

I dropped my bombs and flew very low to the South, to return
briefly and see the result. My bombs destroyed the second
warehouse.
We immediately regrouped and took a heading of about 330 . A
few minutes later we were approaching the border, and a huge
column of German trucks and armored vehicles was heading to the
front to give support. We attacked it with cannons and achieved
numerous objectives. But the German antiaircraft guns were
starting to explode closer and closer, and we decided it was
time to get out of there.

We continued to fly over the treetops as we left the front line
behind. In the vicinity of Carentan we take a little altitude to
start landing maneuvers. I ordered my boys to land and I did so
immediately, heading to the assigned sector.
My plane doesn't have a single scratch. I even had bullets and
fuel left over. Unfortunately one of my boys has not returned
yet. A reconnaissance flight will depart in search of him.

Haukka, great screenies and wonderful report! I sure do hope
your missing pilot turns up, I know you don't want to have to
write that terrible letter to his family.
Really looking forward to the next mission. :)
