Plane of the Week... homage to the Westland Lysander!
By: Beowolff Date: February 19, 2021, 2:48 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
All you wanted to know about the Westland Lysander (but were
afraid to ask...lol!) ??? ;D ;D
All right, yes... I was instrumental in adding the Lysander to
the game (at least the original version.) I had long wanted to
do this aircraft but not really being a 3D guy, I had no chance
of doing one. Well until myself and DH over at All Aircraft
Sims became friends when I built my original modding site (Free
IL2 Modding). He supplied the bits and pieces, I supplied the
know-how on importing the plane into the game and doing the java
that made it all work. The results is the one you see here on
this site for download. A fine bit of kit, and I'm actually
quite proud of it.
It took MONTHS to import, work out the kinks, get it all as
correct as possible, get it released. I spent virtually night
and day working on this plane for a total of about three months.
DH did a fine job of making the 3D, but he'd never imported and
so knew nothing about making all the parts fit together in the
game. I did...but knew it wasn't going to be easy from prior
builds. But we managed it. It took scads of rework on the
parts, send them back for more rework, import, evaluate, send it
back for rework, and so on. LOL! About killed my arse.
It should have been a major bit of kit for the game, but alas
due to the ever-demanding cries of MORE MORE MORE new stuff from
airplane game collectors, and the battles going on between my
old friends (Ha!) at the SAS site (at that time my NEWEST
enemies due to me wanting to teach new folk free modding) it
sort of got lost in the shuffle of the times.
A pity. For it is a fine plane worthy of Oleg and the game.
I spent some time on the FM so it's not unlike the real McCoy in
flight. Not perfect maybe, but certainly not bad either. Take
her for a spin! She can function as both a spy plane or a light
weight attack job. She'll do well in either.
Here is info for her:

P.12 Lysander Delanne
(Unofficially referred to as the Westland Wendover)[25]
Modification of the prototype Lysander K6127 to carry a 4-gun
turret power-operated tail gun turret at the rearmost end of the
fuselage for "beach strafing" in case of invasion of the UK.[26]
It was fitted with a new constant section rear fuselage and a
much larger tailplane with twin tails, making it a Delanne-type
tandem wing, to support the additional weight of the turret
aft.[26] Both Frazer Nash and Boulton-Paul turrets were
considered but neither electrical (for the BP turret) nor
hydraulic lines (for the FN turret) were installed.[26] The wing
and forward fuselage remained unchanged. Although it flew well,
trials were still underway when the threat of invasion
disappeared and it did not proceeded past trials, most of which
were carried out with a dummy turret.[26]
"Pregnant Perch"
L6473 adapted with a ventral gun position, again for beach
strafing. Crashed during testing after engine failure.[27][26]
[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica,
sans-serif][color=#202122][size=2][font=sans-serif]In 1940 K6127
was tested with a pair of 20 mm (0.79 in) Oerlikon cannon
mounted on top of the wheel fairings, and the stub wings
removed; the intention was to use the aircraft against invasion
barges in the threatened German invasion of Britain.

There is a copy of this plane in BAT... don't know if it's a rip
of mine and DH's or not. But if you've got 4.12/4.09/4.10 this
version on this site here, should work for you if you don't
already have it.

Thanks for this article! I always liked this plane. When I was a
child my father had given me a kit to build, we painted it
silver and for years the Lysander had been hanging around the
house. In the game it is a very versatile plane, it is a
pleasure to fly it. I think the last time I flew it was on a
mission made by you, a very entertaining and recommended
mission, with a lot of action, you have really achieved a good
atmosphere there. I'll see if I still have the track.
Thanks Beo, a good choice.

The typical short-range tactical recon plane for the period,
like the German Henschel Hs-126 or the French ANF Les Mureaux
113/117. A fairly good STOL plane that did a great job trough
the Battle of France and a better one suporting the Dutch,
Belgium and French guerrillas.
Thanks, Beo.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed putting this aircraft
into the game. A labor of love, though rather sad to never see
much done with it by 3rd party guys (paints/skins and
missions/campaigns).
Thanks for your nice comments, gentlemen! 8)

Late to the party but I also enjoy the Army Co-op type planes:
Lysander, Hs-126, Ki-51 ...
Beo - I remember you bringing this aircraft into the game a
while back (time flies). Very much appreciated.
The only issues when flying these types of planes are that (1)
one wish there were more mission variety built in the game for
these planes - e.g. marking targets for other aircraft or ground
forces, artillery spotting, delivering SOE agents among others,
and (2) one wish there's more ground details in the IL-2 maps to
do these planes and their missions justice.

Thank you for your nice comments... one of these days, I'm going
to dig into the guts of my previous work and do some hot
additions to this old work! 8)
