Mission results week 46 2020
By: larsresult Date: November 8, 2020, 2:33 pm

Peliu anti-tank attack
Flown in Vpmod 8th November 2020
Result 260 pts. One AAA ground kill. Survived.
Debrief
Like Terydactyls we took off. I was first off. I kept hand on
the brake, take off flaps, and raised the throttle to 100%. Just
managed to lift off then circled to wait for the others.
Followed the leader as advised. He turned right when we arrived
at the enemy base but the others carried on so I folllowed them.
I managed to destroy an AAA position with guns and rockets but
the flak gave me fuel leaks. Enemy fighters were called out and
I circled closing in on them as they headed for our ship. Before
I got to firing range my engine quit, out of fuel. As Mission
Complete, Primary Target and Hidden Target Complete messages had
come up I pressed Escape rather than bail or ditch. May have got
more points by following my leader to the tanks but happy with
that result and that I survived.

Actual Mission Name: Suppress the Japanese Counter Atkack
(IL2ACC Week46)
Date single mission actually flown: Monday, November 9, 2020
Results/description of mission: MISSION OVER
Mission Score: I don't remember but I destroyed two tanks
Misc. Info if desired: debrief:
We left the deck of our carrier and headed immediately for our
objective. Many support ships and landing craft were in the
area. I identified some armored vehicles entering the head of
the runway furthest from the coast, I aimed my target and fired,
but I was unable to hit. I made a detour taking a little height
to attack again. The enemy fire was intense. When I am getting
closer again, an anti-aircraft blows my rudder to pieces, so I
lose partial control of the plane. At that moment I didn't
really understand what was happening, until I saw the shadow of
my plane on the sand on the beach: I was missing the rudder!
I decided to go ahead, there were still rockets to deliver, and
with a little luck I could hit something. I made a few more
unsuccessful passes while the flak was still focused on me. The
winds of the Pacific moved my plane, and each hit received by
the Japanese artillery, seemed to accommodate my plane. I made
my way to the tanks that were reaching the beach. I aimed as
best I could and fired two rounds. Four rockets shot toward the
western head of the runway. Two tanks flew through the air,
immediately burning like torches.
I wandered off a bit to circle the island and return to my
carrier, but the Japanese bullets had punctured my fuel tank.
The engine began to lose power until it stopped running. I tried
to get to the runway, with the idea of jumping and
taking refuge in an American trench, but fate wanted my plane to
fall into the sea between the landing craft. The wild surf made
it difficult for me to get out of the plane, and I was able to
get on a boat before the sharks ate me.

It's definitely a great mission, and I thought I'd
have better luck (although I have destroyed two tanks). Anyway I
liked it, it is difficult and entertaining. I'm even thinking of
adapting this mission to go to that island with 8 human
pilots.
Now I hope that more brave riders will step up to get the job
done on that beach.

Results/description of mission: Not ideal (see below)
Mission Score: 27 points: Took out two AA batteries

Well, things started off well enough. I had a good takeoff from
the carrier (use plenty of flaps kids) and headed off towards
the target.

Once over the target area I did not see any tanks, but based on
what I learned from Lars and Haukka, I did not want to linger
over the target. So I noticed some AA batteries and took them
out with rockets. I had planned to make one pass and return to
the carrier but now I felt lucky, so I made another pass. Still
did not pick up the tanks so I knocked out a second AA battery.
Swell! I headed back to the carrier. I was feeling really good
that I had my carrier landing approach lined up perfectly. That
feeling turned out to be wrong, dead wrong. I landed on the deck
but quickly overturned and exploded.

Really a great mission. I had forgotten how good PhillK's stuff
really is. Looking forward to the next one. I might try to fly
some of Zeus Cat's Straight from the Farm naval training
missions to brush up on my carrier landings first though.

Excellent, Von. It's weird that you didn't see the tanks, there
are like a dozen of them. Perhaps you arrived too early, before
they left their shelters. You have survived the island anyway.
Although not to return home! Don't worry, you are not the only
one with carrier landing problems these days. I also have to
practice a lot more. It will be good if we do, because next week
we will continue in the same carrier, in the same sea, although
the objective will be somewhat different. My idea is that we do
not do more than four missions of this campaign, so as not to
saturate ourselves with Peleliu, so I am flying and testing the
entire campaign to get the selected missions.
This week still awaits more volunteers eager to burn a tank in
Peleliu: where are those seasoned pilots?
Regards
PD: Where is J30_OttO?

Again a 'not' too happy mission result. However, to look on the
bright side I DID manage to take off perfectly this time...lol.
I'll keep plugging away.
