Airfield/strip pictures to aid mission builder population

sort of collecting airport/strip photos to aid in our making
of/populating them in the game. I stuck this here for now since
I couldn't figure where else it'd go.

This is Henderson field, in Guadalcanal.
How different they are from those represented in the simulation!
The first thing that springs to my mind is the evidence of the
runway compared to the whole surrounding landscape, when instead
our map makers are so obsessed by "invisible" runways (which
often cause the exit off the track during take-off or landing,
because the player simply does not see it!).
Another detail is the palm trees, which often make us think of
South-East Asia, but in reality in these regions they are plants
that were absent at the time of the Second World War (there are
too many now because of the palm oil); in reality, rainforests,
mangroves and even conifers, on high ground, are more
widespread. Palms are sometimes present only along the coasts.
Palm trees are widespread in the Pacific.
Thanks for sharing!

so true, GB... game map airstrips are really very different from
real life airstrips of the time... certainly grass strips did
exist in multitude, yet constant landings and takeoffs also
surely (pretty quickly) turned the grass strips into road-like
dirt/mud surfaces barren of grass. In old photos you can
plainly see that. Other rough, jungle and or forest hacked
airfields were crude, still circled by trees, full of pockmarks
from bombs, scars from construction/fires and son on... in the
Pacific especially, full of water/mud from the constant heavy
rains. Again not shown in the game. It might have been
difficult though, I don't know. I'm thinking some smart lad
could have figured it out.
Here is a strip from Burma...though tiny and I had to blow it up
drastically to read the bottom writing... it says something
about C-47s and P-47s lined up along it's sides... notice it's
VERY rough, soggy condition and looks.

No idea where this is from other than WW2...and obviously a
Mustang strip somewhere.

Here we go...perfect of the South Pacific...courtesy of Time
Life... don't know where it's from but it's obvious Pacific and
I would imagine typically of many of those airfields. And
notice the vehicles/buildings/tents and such are VERY much what
we do have in the game...just not the type of strip exactly.

Ah... finally a German/Italian (?) one from somewhere in the
desert combat? No idea where...sadly. Look at the mayhem
around it though...very confused looking.

Beautiful pictures! Thank you! Please continue to publish them!
Some of them also reveal details or interesting aspects of
airplanes; for example in the last one we see how the German
planes in Africa were often not camouflaged for the specific
theater: the Bf 110 still carries the yellow fuselage strip of
the Russian front and the Ju 52s are all still painted in dark
colors.
