Tournament tactics

Skirata here. Here's what I do in tournaments, in case planning
like this helps y'all.
I've found that the longer the tournament runs, the more the top
ranks fill with power players, so your best chance for early,
easy fights is early, not late.
Rank your squads from weakest to strongest, and use them first
to last. Having four squads fight 5 each costs 14k ally points
... having just one squad fight 20 costs 123k, so use all you
have. 6*, G8, L80, 1-2* mods with synergy is all you need for a
b-lister. I plan to have eight squads ... if they all fight 5
times, that's 28k, leaving 97.5k for my top 3 to fight 6 more
times each, and 15k for my next two to fight 2 more each.
That's 62 total fights, which got me Jyn Erso last tournament.
From weakest to strongest I have:
Use as 100/250 Ally points if possible
Phasma DPS (Rey, Leia, GS, Chewie as tank) 32k [Use only on
rabbits, less than 33k Power]
Palpatine Empire (RG, Vader, Tusken Raider, Cad Bane) 33k [vs >
34k Power, Rebels, Jedi]
Nebit Jawas (other four) 35k [vs > 36k Power, 34k Droids]
Use as 100/250/500 Ally points if possible
QGJ Jedi (Yoda, Ahsoka, JC, IGD) 38k [vs > 38k Power, 38k
Empire]
Ventress Nightsisters (Daka, Initiate, Talia, Fives) 42k [vs >
40k Power low DPS teams]
Use as 100/250/500/750/1000 if possible
Teebo ewoks (other three plus Dengar) 40k [vs Counter teams,
Jawas]
HK-47 droids 42k (IG triplets, Poggle)
Wedge/Lando meta 46k (Wiggsdo, JKA, STHan)
Note most of these teams are straight translations of
Rancor/Tank teams (the Nightsisters were my early Arena/GW
squad, a pet project.

good advice, much like Jyn I plan on just sending a small force
to get a few shards, I am saving for the vader ship. with all
these rapid fire tournaments you really only have 1-2 good runs
in you, and my hope is that generally people care less about
ships, if I can somehow get a 5* tie advanced I will be
ecstatic. Plus the high ranks on that get a couple million
potentially in fleet credits, which unlike regular credits are
actually a huge deal lol

I've never seen less than a 30k powered team in any of my
tournament battles :(

Vader I have had the same experience as you. No matter when I
enter a tournament the weakest teams I see still have 30-35K
power. I am really just happy when I see non-meta teams.
I like your advice Skirata. The only thing that I have to add is
there seems to be some evidence that the latter you join the
easier the shard you are in might be. Obviously this only will
be true if the past trends stay, but I entered with about 14
hours left and am holding 15th place right now with only
spending about 130K ally coins. This was much easier than the
other tourney where I entered right when it started. Not enough
evidence to know if this was luck or not, but it seems to be the
thought on reddit as well.
I used similar teams as Skirata did but basically used each team
until it could no longer win, which unfortunately was only about
3 times for most of the bottom ones.

Lowest power I've ever seen was 29k. My tourney shards usually
look a lot like the competition I face in arena - 35k-40k rebel
& droid teams, 40k-47k grab bag teams.
I've been focusing primarily on staying in the top 1000 in each
tournament. With the new 24 hour format, this usually costs me
around 30k ally points and nets me a raid chest, omegas, and
1.5m+ credits. That's a pretty damn good exchange.

When does it sort you? When you log into the game?

Nate, you are not sorted until you log into the tournament. My
current working theory is later is better.
